Sink Installation: 1/2" or 7/8" sink flange underlap to stone counter?

After following @Joseph Corlett, LLC's expert advice on sink installation in other threads--specifically those recommending a 1/8" positive reveal--I have a question for him and/or anyone else who might want to weigh in. I have an apron-front sink with a 1" perimeter flange. 3 cm soapstone will be the countertop. It is a workstation sink with a single interior ledge. Can I safely have the soapstone-to-sink-flange overlap be only 1/2" for a remaining 1/2" reveal instead of the recommended 1/8" reveal? My thought is to use the extra reveal as another ledge for additional cutting boards. If it's risky to reduce my seal by that much, I'll be plenty happy with the traditional 1/8" positive reveal, but I wanted to explore all options. Photos:

To address your question--I don't have a work-station sink, but I made my own by leaving a positive reveal on the back ledge of my apron front sink. Resting a cutting board on the front and back ledges works fine, and I already had a cutting board which fit. The board also has a groove routed all the way around the perimeter, which helps catch any water, or other liquid, before it runs over the front edge.

The sides of my sink have a flush reveal (m/l ;). I know it's unusual to have two different types of reveal, but I used the sink with a flush reveal all around for a short time, to decide which I liked better, and the positive reveal on the back won out because of the convenience of the cutting board ledge. During the time I was deciding, there was no silicone sealer between the sink and counter top, and even that didn't cause a problem, so, IMO 1/2" overlap with sealer should be fine.

The customers at todays sink installation specifically requested a 3/8" wide rear reveal to allow for a custom rabbeted cutting board. The side reveals are Elkay's recommended 1/8".

Since the flange is 1 1/8", a 3/8" reveal left 3/4" of flange for silicone which is plenty, however, the faucet baseplate required the flange to be reduced by about another 1/4", leaving a 1/2" of flange which is still plenty. I'm comfortable with 3/8" of flange for silicone, maybe 1/4" once in a great while.

If your sink already has a ledge, making another with a larger reveal seems redundant.

That faucet's off by a 1/2" but you didn't see it didja? It was centered in the original sink, but the sink was off center in the cabinet. My sink must be nearly perfect, so that eeked the hole off a tad.

Javamom - I want to agree with what was said above about radiation risk from stone slabs. The bottom line is, you can always just test it. Stick the thing up to a geiger counter and just get the answer. You can go to a slab yard (if that's what you want), follow those general guidelines of slabs to stay away from (though personally I'd skip that qualification even), put the slab on hold and then go out and find yourself a geiger counter. If you need help finding one I can probably help you -- email offlist please. There are very few slabs out there that pose any harm to you. Which won't help you if you happen to choose one that does. But it should change your outlook on the likelihood of your selecting a problematic slab. But then after selecting one, just remove the guesswork entirely: test it. That said, gunk happens. Undermount, overmount, flushmount -- if there's a seam gunk will get in it. If you clean it, gunk will go away. Some may be a little harder than others to clean, but they will all need it. Thus to my mind, function rather than cleanliness would be most important. I happen to wipe stuff into the sink about a thousand times per day, maybe more. ;) So for me, minimizing hangups in that movement would be useful. That dictates undermount. It still needs cleaning. I asked for offset to facilitate it. (the slab can either indent, "overdent" or be flush with the edge of the sink below. I find the indent allows easier cleaning-access). YMMV!

One thing about a big sink: why do you need it? Just wondering: We tell people clean up your dishes ASAP. Don't let them soak: (Change cleaning habits.) Cook: soap up: rinse: stick in dishwasher ASAP. So I agree with going with a smaller sink: or a standard sink. Do not want to void cabinet warranty. This summer: we had a customer "insist" on a three holed sink: Well: I didn't know it would turn into a nightmare! I got the sink wholesale for customer as a nice jester: saved them $200-$300. Well the sink wouldn't fit on day of install! So, handyman had to go over there and cut under the sink into the cabinet! Then I got "yelled" at by the customer for not informing him of the size sink that he picked & insisted on: In good faith, I was helping him to save money buying for him! He had a drop in 3 holed over size sink: big difference from an undermount when it came to the cabinets and new granite. ***Waivers from now on and the customer can buy their own oversized sink & be responsible for the modifications. Just speaking from experience here. ~sorry if I sound like I am venting~ It's all about communication and knowledge before hand: always good to know: I guess be thankful they are bringing that up: ask them to explain in more detail to you what they mean!

I am not any further on the counter :) But I am still planning on using the ply as an underlay. Unless I don't, lol. The soapstone that I have on hold has a small ding in the surface. I can repair it by using epoxy and ground soapstone "crumbs". Then when dry it sands nicely and you really don't see it. I haven't actually bought the stone I have on hold, but its not going anywhere. They might have other remnants soon. I think I will drive there tomorrow and reassess the "ding" and maybe just go with it instead of waiting for something else to turn up. Just got the under cabinet LED lights installed today. I am still working on the crown at the top. I have one length in and have to cut a piece to finish it up. The space is to tight for me to fasten the crown as instructed. I am using extra strong velcro, that will hold 1lb/sqin. It has been working well for the top crown. I used velcro to attach the filler strips to the 2x4 backing at the ends of the cabinets too. It was great. The instructions for my style of crown have you attach the crown at the bottom of the uppers in a way that is not a good method. They have you directly screw through the bottom of the crown and up into the cabinet box. There is a narrow foam strip that gets applied between the crown and box which looks like it is used to block the gap between, so under cabinet lights don't show through. The foam works, but the screws don't finish flush. The screw heads are so obvious. I am going to back each screw out, one at a time, and counter sink the hole so the screw head will be recessed. Then I can cover the holes with a plug or wood filler. I would post a picture of my under cabinet lights but I haven't been able to post pictures for several days now. I don't know what gives.

I love your countertops with the clean lines and square corners i just had quartz countertops installed with curved corners after i had specifically ordered squared. Sadly, they tell me i have to pay and will not replace it. I even hired their designer and we went over all the details including straight clean cut sides and square corners. Not once did they ask me what radius I wanted. She only showed me the buffet in their showroom with squared corners. She then did up drawings with square corners which I signed and they still installed rounded corners. i want to have it replaced, as it isnt what i ordered but now they want to take action if i dont pay the balance owing :( I feel I need to stand my ground as this is a huge investment. Thoughts?

@mama goose_gw zn6OH Thanks for that input! My original pictures are showing up now, and so is your comment which didn't register in my notifications for about 5 hours. The Houzz website acts strangely sometimes, I've noticed. You probably fabricated your countertop yourself, right? I remember the story of your renovation and admire your fortitude.

@Joseph Corlett, LLC Beautiful work, and your customers today must be so thrilled. No, I would never have guessed the faucet is off center, looks great! That's helpful to know I could reduce the flange connection under the conditions you stated. I hadn't thought to do differing reveals on sides versus back, so I really appreciate that idea from you and @mama goose_gw zn6OH. A second ledge helps separate accessories from one another so you can slide them individually, for instance, moving the strainer without disturbing the cutting board on top. It also allows a cutting board on top of another for different tasks. Still, one ledge is certainly better than none if you want the workstation sink concept. I will give this some thought and want to thank you for taking time to reply here and in so many threads that have been extraordinarily useful to me in my renovation. Thanks!
