Show us your gardens - a photo thread - August 2013
Comments (57)I'm a very jealous mole seeing all your glorious gardens. My gardens took a double whammy hit this August. First, the heat/dry conditions which affected so many things and then --- on a very positive note --- my daughter, who lives in France with her family, has been here for a month. It's great to spend time with grandchildren --- the gardens played second fiddle to my family for sure this year! So --- no photos from me but many compliments and plants that are going on my 2014 Wish List. Where to start ? T2D, I love that darling Anemonopsis macrophylla with her shy blossoms. I have the later fall Japanese Anemones, which spread like mad. Does this self seed? Bill, I, too, really admire your stonework and the garden areas you've created. I see your Portulacas are running flush like mine, which self-seeded from last year and are all over the gardens. I love the Crocosmia (had one years ago) and that Hesperaloe parvifolia, two plants that I'll have to search out for next year. They both make beautiful statements. Is that Lithodura beneath it? I was inspired to put some in after seeing yours. One clump died but the other has spread over several feet. Claire, my sedums are still green, but my Phlox 'David' is still standing tall. I'll have to cut back many of my others because of heat stress. I also admire your Frans Hals --- looks as if it's not been bothered by the heat. Franeli, I love the combo of Casa Blanca lilies with --- is that Verbena bonariensis in front? And stack316 --- yours are those interesting doubles I've seen online and in catalogues. Sadly, my lilies are done for the year. Persimmons --- your "volunteer" nasturtiums are adorable --- cherry brightness! Maybe I'll plant a patch of those around the telephone pole in front of our driveway next season. Everyone's gardens are so inspirational. Keep posting, please!...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A photo Thread - August 2016
Comments (15)It's so nice to see Indian Pipes, spedigrees! They have a bit of a ghostly (friendly ghost) look to them. I see them occasionally but I haven't looked lately in the likely spots. My hosta 'Diana Remembered' is blooming in a mosh pit of plants. I have several other plantaginea-derived hostas in there and the other late summer white flowers should be starting soon: I've posted pictures of some of these before but the phlox continue to bloom and delight me in the Phlox Protection Zone. The shorter ones bloomed first and then the taller David's Lavender phlox opened. The late daylilies continue: 'Frans Hals' is winding down after a very long bloom time, but it has a number of seed pods that I hope will allow it to spread (I don't know if the progeny would be the same). This is a wonderful, prolific, daylily. 'Autumn Minaret' 'Challenger' The neighbor has some lovely hibiscus in bloom but I can't post pictures of someone else's yard. My Sweet Autumn Clematis will be blooming soon along with White Wood Aster. When it finally cools down (Heat Advisory today) the roses should come back. Comments (27)These three photos don't look like much, but they were a long time coming. This spring I planted morning glories and moon flowers by this trellis at the back of the house and they have been struggling with the lack of sufficient sunlight. This is one of several garden spots that I am transitioning to homes for shade plants. Next year I shall plant my morning glories next to a newly installed trellis along a fence where they will receive sun all day long, and plant an arctic beauty kiwi vine in this spot which has the sun's rays only until noon. Despite the solar deficiency, this heavenly blue MG managed to produce one flower. The non-heart-shaped leaves on the left belong to the moon vine which shows no promise of buds or flowers this year. These leaves are fuzzy and I am drawn to pet them every time I walk by! Again, these flowers are nothing remarkable, but pansies have always grown well in this brook side garden, back when it was a sunnier location, so I planted these (from seed) without thinking it through. It took them all summer to bloom, but better late than never! And, finally, one of the shade plants I did actually plant this year in an appropriate spot is finally blooming and promises to produce many more blooms, on this and other stems. I ordered two of these plants this spring and they have grown well. I've always admired toad lilies, and now I have some!...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - August 2019
Comments (21)Yes, NHBabz I remember! When Gardenweb went corporate, I drifted away (still miss the Spike days). Since starting a new garden from scratch though I'm finding that most internet plant searches I do, after wading through all the marketing BS, brings me either here or to blogs. My partner, Dave, recently bought a tractor which has been a game changer for moving some of the rock. We're going to take a stab at building a wall with some of the larger stones that have accumulated in "inventory". We're hoping to do so without any back injuries or the loss of any fingers or toes. Wish us luck. I'm still reluctant to add many lilies. Apparently Black Beauty is one of the varieties most resistant to the beetles. I long for the day, I could just plant lilies and not have to worry they would get decimated. Don't get me started on Hibiscus sawfly larvae......See Moreclaireplymouth z6b coastal MA
