How do you wash spinach and other prep sink questions
Comments (42)Last year, there was Ecoli episode in CA and the culprit were wild pigs which has visited the spinach patch. The interesting thing was that the ecoli was not on the spinach it was inside the spinach. The pigs contaminated the soil and the water was as absorbed by the spinach roots and the bacteria was inside the leaves.. So no amount of surface rinsing would have removed or killed the Ecoli. Thankfully, it was a small episode that was quickly contained. The triple washed baby spinach salad bags were quickly pulled from the shelves. Since I first posted, we just finished the countertop and sink install. I have hole for 1 soap dispenser at the sink and plan to keep a spray bottle of alcohol or bleach solution for disinfecting. I have the same sink as cottonpenny and plan to use the sink bowl as the rinse bowl after a cleaning disinfecting routine....See MoreKitchen layout - single sink vs. main sink + prep sink
Comments (21)Green Designs came up with a great plan, as usual. It's very similar to my new kitchen. The aisle between my 9' island with prep sink and the rangetop wall is about 42" counter to counter. Its perfect. I've had much larger aisles and hated them. In fact, that's one of the reasons I reno'd my old kitchen. I'm the sole cook in my kitchen 99% of the time, and I would never, ever, ever give up my prep sink. Ever. I love having a large prep zone with a dedicated water source that I don't have to share with the cleanup zone. I'm usually the one who does the dishes too, but when DH occasionally does that when I'm cooking, he can do it out of my way. This kitchen is my first experience with separate prep and cleanup sinks, but it has changed my cooking habits and way of looking at things in the kitchen. You will not use the sink on the perimeter to prep the way you laid out the space. It's not convenient for daily prep. It is a great place for a cleanup sink. Being over on the side like that, your dirty dishes won't show much. Mine don't. Between the giant single basin cleanup sink and the perimeter location, the few dirty dishes waiting on the counter for the DW don't both my OCDness very much. And as you can see, my kitchen is open or at least semi-open to all the other rooms in the house and to the front door. I much prefer an island being all one height rather than bi-level. Your first inspiration pic island is one height. At one level, you can spread out for large baking/cooking projects and for school, sewing or crafting projects. A large kitchen doesn't have to have wasted space. It just needs to be laid out correctly so you have the right amount of space in the right zones. I agree with everything Holly said. I think you could have a great kitchen here!...See MoreRegular or prep faucet for prep sink
Comments (11)well, i'm kinda thinking as a chef/ prep point of view.. so i don't know what kind of prep work you will be doing. Like my examples, cleaning a fish or washing vegetables, 'high arc' faucet are more convenient. yes, the high arc is to accommodate tall pots, but it's also basically a 'pull out' faucet but instead of the hose hiding under the sink, it's exposed with a springy thing. it's like a 'coiled' electric cord.. so you have all those hose and it let you reach far when you pull the springy thing down. it won't be splashy if you adjust the water volume down when you wash delicate food, instead of more of a full volume for rinsing dishes. So the Brizo is a pretty good prep faucet because it is high and it can pull DOWN very far (better then pull OUT). what i'm just not sure is how smooth and easy it retract.. esp after couple years. If you already have a cleaning sink, and the prep sink is in a central place in the kitchen, i'll still get a 'high arc' but a more elegant one.. .. oh, ya,, when i talk about 'high arc' I mean the ones with the springy thing.. not just a solid fixed high arc faucet. Here is a video to illustrate my point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32t90hU4XvE just my thoughts.. :) Here is a link that might be useful: prep sink This post was edited by noopd on Fri, Apr 26, 13 at 22:32...See MorePrep sink questions
Comments (8)Both sinks have just one drain, and both have disposals. One of my most despised kitchen tasks is cleaning the nasty stuff out of the sink strainer. I am delighted to not have any nasty strainers to clean. We are on septic, so we don't put large quantities of stuff down our drains. The disposals are simply for the purpose of saving us the gross task of cleaning out the strainers, and they are worth every penny!...See Morevinmarks
