Flooring Design Dilemma

Wall to wall carpet recommendations

We are looking to replace the Mohawk SmartStrand wall to wall in our TV room (and on 5 stairs). I’ve been mostly happy with this carpet — it’s insanely stain resistant and has stood up to young kids and old cats. But...it looks terrible at this point. When we installed this carpet over 10 years ago, the only option was relatively high-pile and it is now matted and pulling and desperately needs to be replaced. Looking for a low-pile rug and can stand up to (older) kids and pets.

Please DO NOT comment if your suggestion is to put in hardwood/LVT/etc. and then put an area rug over that. That isn’t what I want. We live in a split level and this needs to be installed on concrete. And, I WANT wall-to-wall. We have hardwood and tile everywhere else. This post is about carpet recommendations. Thanks!

Polypropylene that resembles sea grass. Very soft and comfortable under foot.

Here's one I used for a runner but you could use it for wall to wall:

I would use an industrial low pile carpet.

We put this in our finished basement and stairs. It’s going on 20 years.

How large are the spots? If you have an area (inside closet?) to cut some carpet, it is easy to repair. I have done this with large areas. Cut out the spot, match the new piece and use fabric tac to glue down. A large spot should be sewn with upholstery thread around the edges. Smaller spots can be covered with a waterproof marker. Find an artist store and get a gray as close to match as possible. They have myriads of shades.

It's not so much the color of carpet as the material and cleaning method you use to keep a carpet looking nice. The easiest cleaning for foot traffic and spills I've found is nylon carpet. I have poly in the bedrooms and nylon in the rest of the house. Nylon cleans better hands down. I just use warm water for spot cleaning. For whole carpet cleaning I just use hot water with vinegar. Soap or detergent attracts dirt having to clean carpets sooner than you have to. Carpet cleaning companies like to use cleaner so they get to come back often. Carpets with a multi thread color berber appears to hide more.

Work with your local mom and pop shop and not the big box stores. Talk to the salesperson about the benefits of polyester, nylon or wool then decide which option is best for your budget. Once you’ve gotten to that point then take sample boards home to decide what looks best with your existing paint/furniture/existing hard surfaces.

I Iove both of these — especially polypropylene that resembles sea grass. But I fear both options may become scratching posts to our cats. I probably should stick to a non-loop carpet. I do love the basket weave patterned carpets.

Yes, I understand about the loops with cats. You probably should go with a very low-pile cut carpet.
