Comments (2)only enough facts for one conclusion ... cage it now.. if you havent already ... wounds tend to attract more vermin ... otherwise.. just give it time .... i tend to think that my sickly one.. tends to throw up multiple trunks... so even if the vermin did a thorough job.. i think it might come up from below... i dont think they are grafted... regardless .... you have a few weeks to a month in z6 to see if it comes to life vigorously ... i would leave all wound repair until later in the season .... IMHO ... all trees and shrubs heal themselves .... i would only remove loose bark pieces with pruners or a razor once the trunk starts healing itself ... but that is only what i would do good luck ken...See MoreRabbit damage to trunk--what to do now?
Comments (7)first.. trap and kill the rabbit ... otherwise he will win ... and dont trap it, and make it someone elses problem ... no paint... no compounds ... tree heal thyself ... what makes you presume you can do better than ma nature ... chickewire or a perforated drainpipe sliced the long way .. and set around the trunk ... a feral cat or two ... has destroyed the bunny population in our area ... used to hate the cats... for pooping in my sand... but now i see the light.. rodents, chipmonks.. bunnies... all populations in check ... whooo-rahhh ... good luck.. ken ps: the spiral thingees will work for a limited number of trees .... drainpipe is cheaper if you have a lot of trees to do .. and keep in mind that you go up as high as snow cover dictates ... a one foot protector under two foot of snow.. wont work ... been there.. done that.. lol...See MoreRabbit damage
Comments (10)I don't know your state laws but here in Kentucky its legal to kill any animal if it is damaging your property. We have rabbits thick here and fortunately my yard is crappy and full of clover... so they avoid my hostas. You could plant a patch of white clover in hopes they chose that instead of your hostas. Or you could buy live traps and bait them with lettuce..then either have fried rabbit and biscuits and gravy for dinner or take them off down the road somewhere lol... The cages work to protect your hosta, and so does the light fencing...but I they wouldn't be my ideal control device =) John...See MoreRabbit damage to emerald cedars
Comments (10)ouch .... all you can do.. is wait and see if they green up down there at all ... you should know by end of june .... and if not by then ... you should probably be looking for a shrub or perennials to plant in front.. to hide the uglies ... annuals for this year would be fastest .... burlap would probably be best ... or a hunting dog .. lol ... it has to be high enough.. to be at least a foot above possible snow fall ... rabbit populations vary year in and year out.. who knows if it will always be this bad ... but you have to protect ... and not unlike deer.. they will eat anything.. if they get hungry enough ... i have had two bad winters in a row ... the first year.. they did a lot of damage.. all bizarrely 2 or 3 feet up ... after the snow melt ... and this bad winter.. nearly nothing... i presume.. because the first winter reduced the population ... ken ps: you could also look to rabbit fencing.. to keep them out of your yard ... they can go thru regular chain link ... some zip ties.. and a few rolls of finer mesh ... might keep them out... and once you break the habit of them coming in ... you might win ......See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
