Bathroom Tile Protruding out n Cleaning Problem
Comments (4)It looks like the wall has deteriorated behind the tile, which isn't unusual when water has had places to get behind the tile, especially if the apartment was built many decades ago. What is peeling off is probably a silicone caulk that someone put over the grout lines to attempt to reduce the water infiltration through the grout lines, is my guess. My experience with my old house (built in 1929) is that there is no fix for the tile after there is so much water deterioration of the wall behind the tile, short of removing all of the damaged wall, replacing it with cement board or whatever is the most up-to-date wall product these days, and then re-tiling. I'm sure you're not going to do that work for a place you rent. What we did before we bit the bullet and replaced the tub/shower walls, is to neatly duct tape white vinyl shower curtain liners to the wall to prevent further damage. Put them up high on the wall but make sure they cover all the way down to the top of the tub. The liners are cheap---like $3-$5. They keep the wall dry. And you won't have to look at the crappy walls if you get white liners rather than clear. It's not an elegant fix, but it will work for 3 months. In any case, old wet walls deteriorate and it shouldn't be something that the landlord holds you responsible for. Not sure how to clean it for now. Elbow grease, scrubby sponges, and household cleaner with hot water? Looks like it will take some doing....See Morecleaning bathroom hex tile
Comments (2)Is it possible the coating is paint? We lived in a house where they had painted white hex tiles, that lined an old shower. I guess the discolored caulk was too much for them. The reason I ask is because it sounds like the same peeling we had, it actually came off quite easily as this paint job wasn't meant to be in this wet area. Just a thought....See MoreHow best to clean this bathroom tile?
Comments (22)But the elf also recommends using bleach on sanded grout. I had white grout with white countertop tiles in my kitchen. I did use bleach and it never whitened the grout. I tried sealing it and it didn't do anything. That's going to be the issue--what cleans it when it mildews? Are you squeegeeing? Graywings recommended a steam cleaner and I've heard they are good but you need to keep refilling the reservoir because the hand-helds are so small. Worth looking in to. I'd see if the John Bridges forum has addressed cleaning methods....See MoreCleaning granite bathroom floor tile
Comments (5)If anyone had an idea who that was, I would. The bulding is 10 years old, and we bought the apartment 5 years ago, and moved in 16 months ago. When I have needed other info, the building manager just says that the developer left no info, not even drawings of the building. I had to ask the super what the floor material even was....See Moreapple_pie_order
