Interesting...we looked into building an underground home but went with a one story above and one story below in our new house. Part of the issue is getting natural daylight into the different rooms. One house I saw solved it by being no more than 24' deep. This one looks to use a lot of skylights which themselves can be problematic. It's a neat thing to do but so potentially fraught with issues.

Not so much "underground" as seemingly a building site excavated on a slope and covered with dirt. I don't know if this is the rainy part of BC but I'd want to know a lot about the drainage system on top, it's not like you could re-roof if there's a leak.

Cost wise, a Canadian dollar is currently about 72 US cents so it's not as expensive as it might at first seem. Though, if it's out in the boondocks, who knows.

What is the purpose of an underground house? Insulation? Wouldn't it always be cold, like our basement?

I was hoping it would have some sort of interesting interior feature. I once saw a house in Peru that was built to accommodate a giant boulder, which literally formed a wall and protruded out into the room. One of the coolest features I've ever seen.

Love the acreage, and the house is quite nice. DH has always wanted an underground house. Not me, I want windows in every room. He's happy with the curtains closed most all day.

jupidupi, underground is for energy efficiency. Once you get below the frostline, the earth's temp is steady at about 50° so you never have to heat the house up from outside air temp of say 0° or cool it down from say 100°.

Instead of building underground, we use a geothermal heating and cooling system where fluid is circulated to the earth to capture that ambient temperature. Right now I have the AC on so it's taking the heat out of the air in our house and putting it into the earth. In the winter, it's the reverse.

Very pretty although it has too much of a basement vibe for me. Love the land that comes with it.

someone built an underground house near me but it had to be demolished because of a high radon level.

I've had dreams in which I've gone into underground temples (not houses), but I also would not want to live in a house with a basement feel. I've only been in one house (and that was in Vancouver) that had a basement.

I love our basement, it's so nice and cool down there. I always joke to my husband that we should have put our family room down there!

It’s very nice, but it’s not a home for everyone. :-) I love to google cave homes with waterfalls inside, giant crystal rocks though out the house, beautiful chandeliers hanging down from rock ceilings........unreal, but they do exist.
