First of all, don't use landscape fabric; it's bad for the soil, bad for plants and most certainly doesn't prevent weeds. Second, it's a little late in the season to begin a veggie garden, but you could start prepping for next year. Third, post on the vegetable garden forum.

And of course you need full sun.

I wondered about this myself. The sun hitting one spot "every other day" is what made me pause........not sure how that works :-)

Looks as if someone once attempted to lay plastic and cover it with stones. Plants don’t mind a few stones but the plastic has to come out entirely. The bed is small. The only weed prevention needed is a pair of hands. Or just one hand come to that.

I see people are saying I’m planting this year. NO. That’s not the case. The goal is to start planting next year. I just want everything to be ready and set for the following year

Alright, I will keep that in mind. If that is the case then the spot near my drive is the best then. Is there anything I can grow that would still be beneficial for me and my family?

Any vegetable would be beneficial for your family. We have no idea where you are located and you haven’t shown the second possible site. You also haven’t explained what you mean by the sun hitting ‘every other day’. You need to provide this information and ask specific questions. Not just ”what can I plant?”

If this is an old property there might be lead in the soil that close to the house from lead house paint. And maybe a history of cats using the bed as a litter box. Perhaps a history that would continue if a new planting is made there.

Then there is the issue of the light exposure perhaps being inadequate. If you are thinking in terms of having a very small planting such as the space shown would permit maybe instead buy or make some free standing (portable) planter boxes, put them in a sunnier spot and fill those with purchased potting medium, plant vegetables there.

Soil is too wet and will have poor structure due to it having been churned by vehicles - looks like it has been used as some kind of driveway. Look instead for another spot that has presumably clean, freely draining ground in apparently good condition, remove the grass (if present) and make a new bed there.

HI Whale! Its really nice to see a young person having an interest in growing stuff and with a goal to study Agronomy, someone the human race will need more than ever in the future.

I have a cool thing you can do right now with your garden plot that will help build your soil and grow better stuff next spring, its called a cover crop.

How about planting a legume from the pea family (Fabaceae). They also call a cover crops "green manure" and what farmers plant when they need their soil to sit for a while like you. A green crop is used as mulch and adds nutrients to the soil.

A good legume is a good clover and will add a lot of biomass (organic matter), and free nitrogen to the soil. Find some crimson clover, yellow blossom clover, sweet clover, white Dutch clover, arrowleaf clover, or berseem clover to name a few, and spread the seeds, rake in and water and watch them grow. But one thing, let them flower but don't let them seed or you will have weed seed next year, so just work the cover crop into soil before they seed.

One thing you can do now and eat in the fall is Broccoli. Plant the seeds now and follow instructions on package and you will have broccoli this fall. So clean up your spots and start planting!

You seem to have masses of space. Is there a reason you are restricted to the two spots you’ve shown us?

In your second picture, there seems to be a large expanse of sunny grass that looks ideal for placing a vegetable garden. Is that on someone else's property?

There's no need to put anything beneath the soil in your bed--that will just block your plants' roots, and it won't prevent weeds.

Whale, if I were you here is what I'd do:

Choose a spot in full sun all day and build a raised bed there.

Fill with good soil, compost, grass clippings, fall leaves etc. to build good soil for next summer. If it's ready soon, you might be able to plant a few fall crops this year:)

In the raised beds along the house, remove the plastic and plant some shade loving flowers for your family's enjoyment.

This is another place.

You want somewhere that gets as much sun as possible, that isn't too far from the house to run a hose for watering. If that spot is too wet, too hard to dig, or just for fun put in raised beds. Untreated pine 2 x6's or 2 x 8's work well, and will last ten years, IME. 4 ft by 8 ft beds are considered a good size. Getting the soil to fill them is the hardest part, and will depend on what sort of local resources you have.

If you get the beds prepared reasonably soon (however you decide to do that) greens are easy and fast. Left to their own devices, they will also reseed and be around for years. We've had arugula for about 10 years now, and Russian kale for 20.

Next year, if you want to plant things like tomatoes, pay very close attention to how long it takes varieties to mature.

What about here?

Sure you can grow something in that space next to the building. I would recommend you repair those sprung siding boards before anything else. Yes, clean out all the plastic and as much of the stones as you can. Put in new boards for walls and replenish the area with good soil... and grow plants that are very shade tolerant. Getting some sun every other day, you need deeper shade plants.

The open sunny spaces are much more optimal for growing veggies- most veggies like a bit more sun. Then it just depends on what kind of garden bed you want. How much work you want to put into your garden bed.

We don't know how much sun any of these places get. Spots to the south of trees are going to be sunnier, therefore better, than spots on the north of trees. Those are the types of things you can know/find out, but we can't.
