I know this is an old thread.... figured I would post anyway. I have been looking at granite and quartzite. We took Quartz out of the equation. Anyway....found a quartzite I love love love called Superwhite. However, they told me that they do NOT suggest quartzite for kitchen counters at all. They said it tends to etch and stain far more than granite :(((( But then I see people here using it..... I want to just go for it...but its an expensive project to have to change out in a year or two. Any feedback on those that have used it.....

Sochi I did read your posting with pics of white quartzite and marble. Which one are you using? My concern is the staining. I sprayed a sample with a home store sealer as directions called for. I tested ginger ale, salad dressing, blue berries, hot sauces, etc. I let it sit for 5 to 7 minutes and then wiped. I found that the quartzite absorbed the liquid and left spots. These spots did disappear in about an hour but left a residual mark almost like it etched off the sealer. Those marks will be visible as you walk by the counter. I'm certain this will bother me. I am wondering though if the sealer I used is inferior to a professional sealer that will be used by the installer. Our fabricator is getting us a new sample to retest. I was just curious if anyone has had experience with Silver Quartzite. It's almost like concrete - solid grey in color but once you come up to it you'll see tiny brown specks and some blue also. I have white carrara marble dining table. High polish. When it came from the dealer it stained and etched. Small stains could be reduced at home by using rotary tool with jewelry paste to polish those off. I used Mellerud made in Germany. I cleaned top with warm water and dishwashing liquid. Polished off all small water stains and then sealed with this liquid several times. I use just a regular clean sponge and cover surface with Mellerud spread it around evenly let it soak and then apply more to remove the surface remains or move them around to create even coverage. Every time you add more liquid it will reactivate and move the excess liquid that has dried on top that will allow you to remove the unneeded excess of sealant. I repeated this about 4 times. Let it dry overnight and then repeated the same process in a few days. After about 7-8 coats the table become unstainable. Water just wipes off without leaving marks , same with oils or wine. Of course you don't let any spills sit on the surface for hours but 10-15 minutes of exposure will not harm my marble top anymore. I am sure I would have to repeat the sealing in a few years , but so far it has been liquid-proof. Do not ever assume that the marble you get from the store comes properly sealed- lesson I have learned the hard way. BTW, this sealant does not affect the color of my top at all, I have not noticed any shade or haze of different color.

Test the stone for etching and absorption. There's been a ton of improperly fabricated/sealed quartzite horror show threads here lately.
