Hi, Mine are Conestoga RTA cabinets that I assembled and finished (my kitchen was DIY except electric and plumbing rough-ins) I chose inset for the uppers, and full-overlay for the bases. I wanted a paneled DW and felt that I could get a better result that way. Also, I used different door styles for each.(Conestoga lets you create a custom door style by specifying any type of detail). We're in the middle of assembling a Scherr's kitchen now. We had planned on an IKEA/Scherr's combo for a long time, but in the end felt that our tiny kitchen would be best served by going the all-Scherr's route, so we could customize things as needed (and because the closest IKEA is almost 5 hours away). We ordered sample doors (unpainted and two wood types) and went back and forth with Leon, the owner, over the details. When we were finally ready to place an order in late October, the lead time was 10-12 weeks. However, there was a last minute cancellation/delay of an east coast Scherr's project due to Hurricane Sandy, so Leon pushed us up and we got our cabinets in 4 weeks. Cost for our 10x10ish kitchen was a couple thousand more than IKEA and a couple thousand less than a local cabinetmaker (also frameless cabs). As I said, we're still sorting through all of the boxes and assembling cabinets, but communication and customer service have been great so far.

You need to know how much it will cost to have the RTAs installed before you can make a budget comparison. Some RTAs (Ikea among others) are considered good quality, especially for the price. Others are not. You'll need to share what brand you are considering. I know you will focus on making sure that this kitchen meets the needs of your parents first, rather than just what it looks like. This is a secondary kitchen, so it doesn't have to be up to the same standards as the main kitchen. However, it needs to address aging in place requirements more than the standard kitchen does.

We ordered these from Build.com for our remodel. They look great, and arrived quickly, and in the box they seem to be decent quality. Price is very good for this look -- a clean modern inset shaker. I am not finding much in the way of reviews, however, so wanted to see if anyone else had experience with this brand.
