Help with small front porch design
Comments (8)Another drive around town yielded this inspiration picture. I kind of like the copper roof combined with the wood. Also good to know the right terms. Portico & door hood. Got it. I have seen some door hoods that are copper and are held up with wrought iron looking brackets from Crescent City Copper. Here's a link. Could something like these work? http://www.crescentcitycopper.com/_catalog_80188/Copper_Awnings Here's the copper roof with wood pic....See MoreHow can I decorate this small front porch?
Comments (3)A potted plant would work except area appears to be shady so your options are limited. Adding anything more might bring to light how small the area is. It might be better to spend time, effort, money in the curved area of your walkway. Looks like you already have some nice, well cared for shrubs. Add some showy annuals and make it the focus vs the tiny porch ETA: there is a common misconception that just b/c a space is small, it is easier to decorate. On the contrary, it is harder b/c you have to make it tastesful w/o looking crowded; not an easy task....See MoreSmall front porch decor
Comments (11)Whatever you like really. But if this is your front door, from a practical standpoint I'd focus on spending time and money installing some type of walkway from the driveway to the front door. Looks like this might be a new build? Even wood chips bordered by rocks or landscape timbers would be better than just dirt and grass, particularly when it gets wet. Seems like the cheapest easiest thing would be cement . . . But I've even seen walkways done with pavers surrounded by ubiquitous red mulch and landscape timbers to keep the mulch from traveling. Depends on your budget and taste. Then landscape with something colorful along the garage. If it gets sun, you might consider rudbeckia, that's what we had along our garage side. Maybe mixed with some colorful orange asiatic lilies for a red, yellow orange theme. Or even coreopsis, another easy peasy perennial to add a lot of seasonal color. Some little golden globe shaped arborvitae or a dwarf mugo pine for winter interest. Again, what's common and easy to find around here (I live in your zone). That's what we had. Depends on what you like. Another stunning combo is the pines or dwarf junipers mixed with bright red landscape roses. That's what we had along the entrance walkway of another place I lived. Vinca as a groundcover below. Then keep it simple on either side of the doorway, just buy something pretty already made up at the big box store that fits the light conditions. Don't overthink it. Maybe a bench if you like to sit out there. I have a bench outside our front door where I can rest after weeding the front garden. But focus on the path leading up to the door and it's functionality as far as providing snow and damp free access to your front door . . . hosta are good if it is shady along the garage. That's what my dad has, with some small yews. If you have deer though, yews will get eaten, as will arborvitae. Stick with junipers or pines or dwarf blue spruces . . . there is a juniper shrub called "blue star juniper" that is a very popular foundation plant. The blue spruces, unless you get an extra small one, tend to get too big eventually. Other great small foundation shrubs are "wine and roses" small weigela or "magic carpet" small spirea. Or "goldstrum" if you like yellow foliage. Another one is Mt. Airy dwarf fothergilla, I see that one a lot around here....See MoreHelp! I cannot figure out how to decorate my front porch.
Comments (6)First you need to decide how to use the porch. Are you a sit on the front porch type of person? With food or drink? If yes think about adding another seat and some type of table. Is this an area to stand around before coming into the house? If yes your bench is enough, I would consider moving the bench to against the wall to give you more room around the door and color on against the wall. Regardless of how you use the porch put art on both walls. Put colorful pillows on your bench, I like it, colorful pillows will make it stand out more. You might want to consider painting the bench another color to make it stand out. You have a blank slate have fun with the area. Art on the wall can bring in color that plants would, but with fewer limitations, and upkeep....See Moremononhemeter
