Paint Design Dilemma

Gray version of SW Latte Color

My entire interior is painted in Sherwin Williams Latte (6108). I've seen some people use this as an accent color, but I used it as my one (and only) wall color, with Sherwin Williams Dover White (6385) trim. Someone once told me that color is too dark and should only be used as an accent - but then I saw it in someone's kitchen and disagree.

I've always liked my trim color, so I intend on keeping that. But I'll be switching up my house to gray and getting away from the beige. Of course, there are tons of gray's available that have been suggested to me to the point where it's overwhelming. I'm trying to find something that matches the darkness of SW Latte, which I see as being sort of a borderline between what's acceptable for an accent vs a whole interior. Not too light but not too dark.

Any good suggestions for making this transition?

What you're looking for is kind of in a weird pocket in the major brand's collections. Here are some options, however:

Sea Gull Grey - Glidden (also @ The Home Depot)

Motley - C2 Paints

And the first one I would pull/test is PPG's Sharkskin PPG 1025-4

You could end with dreary mud.......?: )

I'd try Ben Moore "Collingwood" keep some warmth and lighten up a bit. Or even Ben Moore Edgecomb.

Paint is one element in a space. No law states the entire universe shall be painted gray, and you have considered all your flooring, furnishings _ fabrics, etc.............right? Don't end with a chain reaction that sends you to the poor house.........and a fight between warm and cool that ends up looking as a real "reach" . Forced, in other words.

I was having a terrible problem picking a gray whole house color. I wanted something light and warm. I ended up with Pale Oak. It’s gorgeous in every room. Light and warm off white in a neutral ivory living room with afternoon sun. It never looks pink or purple. Just deeper warm gray or light gray/off white depending on lighting and time of day. It’s very neutral as I have mostly neutral surroundings. You can add color easily. I added a purple vase and some black accents in the living room. Benjamin Moore white for the trim.

Unfortunately, after receiving samples from Samplize, BM Gray Owl is WAY too blue in our kitchen. DH didn't like BM Wrought Iron and thought it looked too black. This has been one of my inspiration kitchens and it use Gray Owl cabinets and walls with a BM Whale Gray island: DH liked the Whale Gray but I'm feeling that it should be just a tad darker so I'm going to order a sample of BM Trout Gray and see how it looks in the space as it appears just a bit darker on the fan deck. BM Trout Gray Others samples I purchased were SW Agreeable Gray, BM Apparition, and BM Nimbus but none of them seem quite right in my quest for a neutral warm gray without too much blue or too much yellow undertone. Any suggestions? I'm almost at the point of going to white cabinets but I swore off white after our last new kitchen :(

Here are a couple - very similar to AG in all attributes, just more green. Follow the hue degrees on the outside of The Color Strategist Color Wheel. As the hue angle number gets bigger, the color gets more green.

SW has more options for a lighter Drift of Mist 9166. Their computer tailors the formula to the base version you want. I asked for the formula for a gallon in the one base for eggshell. Colorants are added in increments down to 1/128th ounce. For a gallon- B1-Black 4/32 +1/64 +1/128, R2-Maroon 1/64 +1/128, Y3-Deep Gold 5/32. They don't show a standard formula in eggshell for a quart. They do have one for satin. 1 quart- B1-Black 1/64, N1 Raw Umber 4/32. But they also can mix a lighter version by percentages. One gallon is considered 100%. A 25% version in a gallon of eggshell is B1-Black 1/32, R2 Maroon 1/128, Y3-Deep Gold 1/32 +1/128. The computer controls the colorant add so everything is repeatable.

My last house was painted SW Latte on every wall. It makes the rooms cozy and warm with a little depth. It's my go to wall color. Trim, I always use SW Alabaster.
