I have the Benjamin Moore wrought iron for my island and it leans blue but looks dark gray at with less light. Not sure the SW match but I had planned to paint a door that color and I had painted a 1x with the BM wrought iron paint. I took the paint chip and my sample board in to my cabinet maker and he was able to match it even though he doesn't use BM.

Agreed. While sometimes there are really good equivalents between the 2 brands, it is my understanding that either chain can duplicate a color very very well.

@K H and @salonva, the problem is that my Amish cabinet maker uses a particular company (not Sherwin Williams) for his finish. They can convert SW colors to this brand but not others. I'd need to convert a BM color --->SW color--->their color. I'm going to double check with him on that, though, just to make sure.

I'm needing that perfect balance between blue, black, and gray and it's SO dang hard to find :(

I think you should find a SW paint you love and match that. Don't try to double match...

Iron Ore is really pretty.

so you want a blueish tint? or do you want more of a charcoal?

Maybe you can buy those peel and stick 8.5x11 sheets or get little pints and paint wood?

I feel your pain. Is it possible to take the chip of the BM color that you like to a SW store and see what color they say is closest? Not suggesting that it will be identical but it might read true enough. Also, it would take the mystery out of it in that you would have a known quantity. I did that a few years ago , inquired what would be the closest match to such and such color. It's worth a shot if your paint people cannot convert BM to SW.......

Wrought Iron - SW 7076 Cyberspace

Whale Gray - SW 7067 Cityscape

Those are the closest matches SW has to the BenM colors and they're pretty far off in terms of "matching".

I also prefer BM colors. If you can get your cabinet maker to match off a swatch, you could get paint samples from Samplize which uses the actual paint from the manufacturer and have the cabinet maker match from those.

By just looking at what BM and SW show for how much red, green and blue are in each color, these colors might be close matches:

BM Gray Owl -> SW Lattice 7654: is a tad darker than Gray Owl but seems really close.

BM Wrought Iron -> SW Rock Bottom 7062: Maybe a tad more green? Cyberspace is also close but has more saturation so may look more blue than Wrought Iron.

BM Whale Gray -> SW Software 7074: Is a tiny bit more blue than Whale Gray but overall very close.

@shead whatever you decide will be awesome. I think sometimes it's easier to do paint in person if you can.

Maybe you can bring samples of your BM colors. It might be easier than you think.

[I struggled because of COVID as stores were not open but I had a good designer friend who got me sample sheets of about 20 colors [sadly none close to what you want].

The nearest BM store is 1.5 hours away and SW is 50 mins. I guess I need to make a trip to one and/or the other before deciding for sure.

Thankfully, the cabinet maker says I have a few more days before deciding for sure. He uses Woodwright finishes so I'm going to call them to see what they'd need to formulate it.

You don't need to drive anywhere for samples. Just order the samples from Samplize and they get shipped to you. They have both BM and SW color samples.

My question for you is have you tested the BM Colors in your kitchen?

What you see in a fan deck may not look the same in your space. A one inch square can be quite deceiving.

Color and color perception changes based on light and surrounding colors.

Please have the cabinet maker provide you with a color sample before the cabinets are completed and installed. We have seen too many posts where the installed colors were not what the home owner anticipated.

The good news is that I called the actual company, Woodwright, and they said they can match BM colors! Yay!

Yay! Definitely ask for a sample of their color match using their products. Most require you to sign off on the color(s) but if they don't be sure to ask.

@shead that's great news! so what color did you decide? thinking wrought iron?

My cabinet maker made me two sample doors, one in the color for the perimeter cabinetry and one in the color for the island cabinet. The color on an actual cabinet door may look slightly different than the same color painted on a wall because of the cabinet paint sheen. It’s really important to be confident in your cabinet color choice before proceeding because a factory paint finish will last the longest. Also, you can use your sample doors if you plan to go countertop shopping or are looking at backsplash tile samples.

Ask your cabinet maker if he will make a sample door for you before you have to finalize your color choice.

@Trish Walter, still not sure. We have to go to Nashville in the next few days to pick up the stone for our fireplace so I'm going to stop at BM store and pick up a fan deck with those colors. I got a Classic Colors one a while back but didn't get the other one and whatdoyouknow but the colors I like are mostly in it....lol

Unfortunately, after receiving samples from Samplize, BM Gray Owl is WAY too blue in our kitchen. DH didn't like BM Wrought Iron and thought it looked too black.

DH liked the Whale Gray but I'm feeling that it should be just a tad darker so I'm going to order a sample of BM Trout Gray and see how it looks in the space as it appears just a bit darker on the fan deck.

Others samples I purchased were SW Agreeable Gray, BM Apparition, and BM Nimbus but none of them seem quite right in my quest for a neutral warm gray without too much blue or too much yellow undertone. Any suggestions? I'm almost at the point of going to white cabinets but I swore off white after our last new kitchen :(

I love iron mountain as a cabinet colour. It is ours and really lovely.

What about SW Wall Street. I have it my bedroom, it has just a touch of blue.

My main source of indecision is for the perimeter cabinets which I want to be a light warm gray. If I could narrow that down, I feel like the island color would fall into place :/

If Gray Owl looks blue in your house, try BM Classic Gray and Silver Satin.

You can also check out BM Kendall Charcoal for the island. It's a not too dark neutral gray in most situations. It's similar to Trout Gray but less blue.
