Hi, am I colour blind, all Greige looks white...

I am trying to choose paint colours for my open concept kitchen/living room. It has south, north and west windows. I will be painting the ceiling and wall all one colour. The current White ceiling is overwhelming and I would like it to blend in with the entire space.

I have samples many different Greige (BM and SW) paints and they all look very similar.

This makes it hard to choose as I am trying to avoid blue tones which occured with Gray Horse and Silver chain.

From left to right: Classic grey, Modern Grey, colonnade grey, grey owl, edgecomb grey, accessible beige and agreeable grey.

Cabinet: cherry, Quartz: Zenith Cashmere Original.

So far my preference is Accessible Beige, what are your thoughts.

Current room under renovation

south windows

North windows, West patio door

I prefer the warmer colors of the samples you show: Modern Gray, Edgecomb Gray, and Accessible Beige. If your south-facing windows deliver as much light as I suspect, it will probably bleach out the lighter colors, so I think Accessible Beige would be a good choice.

I ruled out all shades of beige 40 years ago and haven't looked back.

I was shocked to see this thread today!! I logged on to get some Christmas inspiration and to ask questions about colors for the tree!! Kmcg - how in the world did I miss that gorgeous gal!! Nah, she doesn't look a bit naughty or a bit like Marley. Well, I haven't done a THING to my house - not even pulled out decorations. To answer the last 2 ? ...... The cabs were here when we built the house in a cherry finish. I had a painted come in and tape everything off & he sprayed the cabs & then glazed them. People really thought I was crazy for even thinking about painting new cabs ! - but I lived with them for 3 years and was still unhappy with them. The buffet, I had made very reasonably from a cabinet maker. It would be an easy fix for an existing buffet with 3 doors on the bottom. Just take off middle door & install the wine racks. It was originally painted a sage green & I painted it black after painting my walls green. Thanks everyone for your comments and compliments. I really appreciate it. Smiles:)

Here is a picture I pulled from the internet of samples painted on poster board Here is a picture of my dog helping me pick colors with my samples painted on 140 lb watercolor paper Superimposed the two pictures for a closer comparison If you want better quality paint samples use watercolor paper - it is made to absorb water without much warping and has a texture that will resemble wall board more closely. Looking for an off white/beige/greige color

The kitchen cabinet colors are near identical to the first picture at the link: https://www.hungelingdesign.com/blog/secret-recipe-for-creating-a-true-english-kitchen I am doing a Plain English style kitchen and like the cabinets in the picture at the link, if you place certain colors around it, it will appear more gray, but a whiter background makes the cabinet look more off-white cream with a hint of tan or brown. The reason I mentioned avoiding yellow was because my Benjamin Moore Navajo White has a creamy yellowish undertone (which I love) but when the cabinet sample was placed against it, it definitely adopted a stronger gray tone. So that's why I'm thinking I need to avoid a yellow tone paint but I also don't want stark white walls. I may be thinking in the wrong direction entirely.

From this Canadian website, https://thepaintpeople.com/painting-101/top-10-benjamin-moore-light-neutrals/ They mention "It was hard to decide between the two very similar brown-gray neutrals, 2111-60 Barren Plain and 2108-60 Abalone, so I’ve decided to mention both. They’re both comprised of violet/pink undertones, which is intensified under cool light (ie: daylight) and all but disappears under warm lighting, (ie: warm pot lights). These colours are rooted in a brown base colour that leaves the impression of a warm gray, but typically remaining light and neutral!" There is also Classic Gray – LRV: 74.74, Pale Oak – LRV: 69.89, Dreamy Cloud - LRV:76 meaning it will reflect quite a bit of light back into a room. In an intensely lit room with direct sunlight, it will fade out quite a bit but will regain its colour once the sun shifts.

Commit to your choice and then don't think about it again. Every color will change with the light, and how it works with all the other colors in the room will change too, so don't obsess to much. Can you tell I've had to have this conversation with myself?

I’m not sure if Sherwin Williams is currently doing in home color consultations, but you should call your local Sherwin Williams store and see what they can offer. The color consultant in my area is excellent. We were doing a complete home renovation, and she helped us not just with paint colors, but with other elements of our design as well. (I had tons of flooring and cabinet color samples and was having a hard time making my mind up.)

Thank you everyone, great suggestions. BM will only consult in their stores during Covid. They will not even come out from behind their counter to help choose paint. I do t lame them. I am also leaning toward accessible beige as it has more colour in it.

What about buying some samples and painting in the space.

More great advice, folks! I am hesitant to do online consults as this space is so unique with windows from 3 sides of the room. But I’ll keep trucking, see what happens.

@ Holly, I can definetly see colour, it’s having 3 windows (SNW) compounded by 17’ ceilings. The colours just wash out. May have to go slightly darker!
