Size of Kitchen sink for 27 inch base cabinet ...

Size of Kitchen sink for 27 inch base cabinet ... need some help. I'm redoing the kitchen with Kraftmaid cabinets. I'm getting quartz counter top and want to get an under-mount stainless steel sink.

Contractor told me get a 24 inch sink, where as the cabinet lady from lowes said upto 25 inch would be fine.

This is what i am confused about:

1) Cabinet size 27 inch implies the inner space is less than 27 inch right? What is the inside dimension for typical 27 inch cabinet?

2) Problem i have is, there are very few 24 inch sink - most i find are 23 inch - the bowl size is about 2 inch less than the outer edge. So really don't want to go down from 24 to 23. I found Kraus have some 24-3/4 inch - which i like.

Sink Dimensions: 18-7/8 in. L x 24-3/4 in. W x 9 in. D
Bowl Dimensions: 17-13/100 in. L x 23 in. W x 9 in. D

Will this fit? What I am thinking - if the counter top guy attaches the sink first - do you really need to worry about how tight the space is on each side?

A 27" sink will undermount into a 27" cabinet. A 33" sink will undermount into a 33" cabinet, etc. I've done this a million times.

The sink manufacturers provide junk clips and want to provide access to fat plumber hands. Strap your sink in place, Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg) or Sink Strap (GranQuartz), no access needed and your sink won't leak.

Oh, and drilling into your engineered stone for the clips voids the manufacturer's warranty, so don't have your sink clipped in place by the fabricator before installation please. And he needs room for the clips along the front so you'll get an ugly fat front rail. Skinny rail with straps:

2 1/4" with a 1 3/8" overhang with straps. Purty,

To clarify one more point .. i went to directsinks website, and used 27 cabinet base, and that Kraus 24-3/4 sink was listed. But searching bit more - it appears Kraus does not recommend it for 27 inch cabinet. So that's where the confusion is - one place says it'll fit, where other source says no

#1 - I dunno. Kohler Karbons have a lot of reach so it should reach the faucet just fine. However, it might not reach to all corners of the sink or as far as you want. You would need to know the depth of the sink and the reach of the faucet to figure that out. You should be able to find that information. #2 - Again, I dunno. Your height, arm length and other personal anatomical features would determine that I suggest mocking up a counter 27" deep and leaning across it to see how far you can reach comfortably without straining.

Sophie, who is a kitchen designer, and practigal both explained why you would not want to put a 26" sink in a 27" cabinet. I have seen that advice many times on GW in my four years here, but practigal's is the most thorough explanation I've seen. I hurriedly went and measured my sink just to be sure I didn't do such a thing and am breathing a sigh of relief that I have a 23" sink in my 27" cabinet. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk to your cabinets and counters. I wouldn't take the advice of Navy Momma's GC, who you've never met. But then, I wouldn't take the advice of your KD either after seeing some of her layout ideas!

Despite what the sink manufacturers say, you can undermount a 30" sink into your 30" base cabinet as long as you strap the sink in place. I've put 30" sinks into 27" cabinets.

@Joseph I’m planning on getting a 23 inch sink (Ruvati Workstation) for my 24 inch ikea sink cabinet. From what I understand, as long as the interior dimensions of the sink fit inside the cabinet, the sink can just rest on the cabinet frame. Do you recommend the countertop installers use the Universal Sink Harness alone for installation? Or do they use any other form of support as well? Many thanks.

You don't want a sink flange resting on a cabinet top edge as a method of mounting. Cabinet tops cannot push a sink tightly against a stone bottom as a HUSH or a Sink Strap or two can. No other method is necessary.

I’ve attached two photos showing the sink flange resting on the cabinet frame, as well as the approximate 0.5” clearance of the interior of the sink to the base cabinet. Will the HUSH work with such little clearances? Do you suggest I purchase the HUSH before the countertop fabricators come for measurements/installation, and should I purchase different screws with the HUSH (have heard the included screws are not good).

Yes. Smack the clips with a hammer to flatten them if you have to.

I'd install the HUSH to the cabinet sides before the top went in if your fabricator won't do it. The screws are fine.

Can you use the HUSH straps with a granite/composite sink, which is much heavier than stainless?

Yes, no problem. Depending upon your drain location, you may want to use (2) Sink Straps from GranQuartz/Regent Stone.
