With a higher ceiling height, I think I would lean to the larger size. Despite the size of your island, I would worry that the smaller would look wimpy. Unless (like Michele mentioned), you went with three lights. Again, take my vote for what its worth, I obviously favor the bigger since that is what I did, but think it will look just fine either way. Isn't it odd there there is nothing in the middle....it is either 8" or 11". I guess the story of a remodel though...you can envision it yet can't find it, or you find it and it is out of your price range! And yes, now I can't imagine having my kitchen with what I orginally wanted either. I was thinking I wanted to match the stainless and pulls, but I do like how the current lights tie with the cabinets. The ORB was one of the several fortunate last minute decisions that I made!

I think about this occasionally - for whom am I designing, and at what focal distance? I am over the top in love with my backsplash from close-up but struggle to make it look 'perfect' from a distance. The pendants in your first picture from 9 hours ago are way too close together IMO, regardless of whether they block the hood. Attention grabbers, ok if the focus should be on them, and/or if you want to distract from something else. Pictures two and three blend in much more - is three from LBL? Now that I review your original post, I think placement, plus or minus a few inches, will be fine. PM me if I can help with any photoshopping. I was going to show some LBL pendants but really like the idea of globe pendants in your space, as you show.

You cannot define location until you are at rough framing and the electricians are locating junction boxes, however, either 2 large pendants or one long island light would be best. Don't know what your styling is? However, you need to think this through, because with one long fixture, you only need one junction box in center of the island. I would put a recessed light on each end of the island and a single fixture wide and narrow in the middle section. That way you would have good sink and counter light while at the same time having good ambient and decorative look. Your cooktop is offset to the island so the main thing is creating nice look over island. Here is an interesting fixture that is 44" wide and has 8-10 lights. It would look impressive and at the same time provide a good bit of lighting. In addition, with a recessed light about 12" in from the ends of the island and a dimmer switch on the island light, you would have a lot of control too. Make sure to do a really good job of looking over the electrical plan. Make the switches separate for island light, overhead recessed lighting, separate for over sinks and island recessed and separate for under cabinet lighting. Lighting is very important and quite often not examined well enough. Doing it at this stage is a lot less expensive and messy than after sheetrock goes up.

Yes, I was looking for something similar, but I had trouble finding one that a) can hang on a sloped ceiling AND b) could hang from a 15' ceiling. I figured I need one that can hang at least 78" to reach counter height, figuring 36" for the island and 36" above the island (subtracted from about 150" of the ceiling, since it won't be at the 15' peak). I found one, from Wayfair "Ariel" Dome Pendant light that may work, but my husband hates it, plus it's metal and he wanted glass... argh. And do I need 1 or 2? Another constraint is that some lights don't ship to my zip code in CA because they don't meet the energy standards... My husband also thought that pully-lights had a lot of strings (he called it the 3 string S shape) and it looked too busy... but I liked it! K
