I think about this occasionally - for whom am I designing, and at what focal distance? I am over the top in love with my backsplash from close-up but struggle to make it look 'perfect' from a distance. The pendants in your first picture from 9 hours ago are way too close together IMO, regardless of whether they block the hood. Attention grabbers, ok if the focus should be on them, and/or if you want to distract from something else. Pictures two and three blend in much more - is three from LBL? Now that I review your original post, I think placement, plus or minus a few inches, will be fine. PM me if I can help with any photoshopping. Hi all, I am in the process of building a house. It's a modern, energy efficient house in Austin, TX. It's fairly small at 1250 sq ft with an open floor plan on the ground floor that consists of an open kitchen/living/dining area, the kitchen opening up immediately to your left as you walk in the front door. There is a 4'8" waterfall kitchen island in the middle of the kitchen. I am trying to figure out pendant lighting (type, size, and number) for above the island. I am going for a mix of modern farmhouse and more sophisticated boho chic. I had originally picked out two 16"W x 24"H vintage gold lanterns, but I now think these will be too large for the 4'8" island and overwhelm the space. I am alternatively considering two cylindrical or round mini pendants by Thomas O'Brien (called Katie) that are 7"W x 15.75"H or 12"W x 14"H. What size would be better? Would two be the right number of pendants?

Hi 1968MV, We do not think that the 15.5 inch glass pendants would be wide enough to cover the space of the island. There would be a wide gap in between as well as gap issues on the edges, depending on how close to the edge you place the pendants. You can certainly use a wider diameter-sized pendant to minimize the gap in between and on the edges but the gap would still be somewhat noticeable from afar. Alternatively, you can try using some smaller diameter-sized pendants and cluster them closer together and have 3 pendant lights over the island, instead of 2.
