1950's Wood Trim Throughout

My house was built in 1959 and it was built well with all high end materials and made to withstand anything. However there is shellacked wood trim everywhere and it makes everything look dated and dark. The woodwork in one of the bathrooms is so prolific because of a linen closet and 2 doors, it has delayed our re-do of that bathroom because we simply do not know what to do. We painted the trim in one of the bedrooms but it took a lot of prep. We could replace it but it is high quality wood and has a lot of life left in it. I have thought of staining it dark or painting it with a gloss white but there is so much of it, we don't want to mess up. Any suggestions? We don't have budget for completely tearing out the wood trim and replacing it with inferior products. It is literally everywhere in this three bedroom, 2 bath house.
