Exterior help on a 1950s rancher - what to do with wood paneling?
Hi! We could use some help with our 1950s ranch home. We already redid the interior in transitional style. Now on to the exterior! I could really use help with the paint color. I'm inclined toward a dark blue with hint of gray, or other beigey gray, but am very open.
Question - what do we do with the wood paneling on the bottom of the house? Remove it so entire front is stucco? Paint over it? Replace with stone facade (not a fan, but again, I'm open). If we paint over it, do we keep the house two-toned, or use just one color? Also looking to eventually replace the front door...

3 years agoI would not change it. I love the earthy gray. The strong horizontal line is reinforced with the wood siding. I would be very careful not to remove the lines and character of your stunning home. It looks like an Eichler house, though not as modern, with its internal open air vestibule. (Lots of Eichler homes on Houzz, if you're interested.)
That said, the doors should be much more open with more glass.
This flat panel door with side lights would look good.

You might consider making one of the two front doors a lot more prominent as I don't know which one currently is the actual front door. There are several ways to address this confusing issue including but not limited to the following; 1. Extend the porch out farther for the real front door. 2. Paint the non front door & railing a color that blends in with the siding color. 3. Address landscaping to help direct your eye to the real front door. 4. Paint the real front door a BOLD COLOR and not a shade of black. 5. Also, as you said, no shutters is a good idea. Best of luck on your project. Comments (5)2. Rather than paint, if you don’t like the colour of your brick, I would consider Romabio masonry limewash. It’s a far softer, more sophisticated finish than paint & when it cures, it’s permanent and mould resistant. Search for photos of finished exterior examples. They have different colours to choose from. Their Avorio, is very close to Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, for example. 1. once you have chosen a colour for the finish of your brick.
