Plantation Shutters or No Window Treatments?

I'm considering either getting 3 1/2 inch spaced white plantation shutters or no window treatments and adding white grids to the windows for some character in my dining area. What do you think would look better? It is the 2 windows next to one another in the dining space off the kitchen... one window looks onto the backyard and the other looks onto our screened lanai. The pictures are a model of our home being built... ours won't look onto the street. We plan to leave the sliding doors without window treatments- I'm not a big fan of curtains and don't want to block all the light.

Edited to add... I would unofficially say my style is bright, pretty, classic, a little cottagey/ coastal but not too much and neutrals or light blues. Here are 2 inspiration boards I have started to give a glimpse... I ordered the chandelier and island lights so far and will definitely use the table as it was my grandparents. I also have traditional style dining room cabinet pictured (it's bigger in person- photo cut off).

Personally...I like the openness of the home without. I fully understand that privacy is a requirement here, but plantation shutters seem to be more of an encumbrance than blinds that can be stored up and out of the way.

I like sheers personally. I hate the black holes bare windows make at night.

We have a deep bay window on the front of our 1893 town house. The three windows in the 11' tall living room are floor to ceiling double hung sashes, and the ones in the bedroom above it start at the 9-1/2 ' ceiling, but stop a couple feet above the floor. We have plantation shutters on only the bottom of both bays, to give us privacy without losing light. There are roller shades in the bedroom, and nothing in the living room, mostly because the fabric for the Roman shades that are going there is still folded in my work room.... :>( The living room:

I am just now researching this same thing. I just ordered faux wood 2" blinds for two bedrooms from J.C. Penny. Really good sale. But the shutter prices were to much $$$$$. I think they quoted me $141.00 per window. I have found some good pricing at netshutters.com around $65.00 for the same window. These are in my kitchen are I need the cafe shutter 19 1/2" wide & I need 26" high. That is just beyond the sash. Now in the master bath I am also doing the cafe shutter and I have three windows mulled together. I need the shutter to be 75" long and 32" high. Again, netshutters had the best price. I asked on this forum about blinds and shutters and someone on here said she got some from this company and was happy with them. They are not the same quality as hunter douglass but lots less $$$$$ Does anyone know where the top of a cafe shutter should be? I thought that it should just about cover the window latch. So I figured 1 inch above the window sash!!

tryingtodecorate, I have the same question. We have shutters throughout our home but I am not sure either about adding panels to the dining room. I will be following this post to. I dont think I have come across a photo where there are shutters with panels, but I would love to see one. Your question about the shutters and blinds, I think you will be ok if your home is not open concept. We opted for shutters throught since our home is very open and you can see several rooms from the family room, I liked the consistency of the shutters.

When I bought a new home 3 years ago, I knew I wanted plantation shutters but worried about color and composition. I had a local vendor come to my home and he showed me actual shutters in place and that was so helpful. My walls are a creamy off-white and the shutters match beautifully. I got the poly design without handles. I love them!!! I keep all the lower ones closed the the upper ones open and angled up. My house is filled with light and looks classy because it matches throughout. Mine are inside mounted and I feel no need for drapes. I feel the shutters blend in so well they don't serve as decor, I am able to use accents in the rooms for decor. The shutters are easy to clean and really do a great job of insulating the house.

I agree with Theresa.

During the day it’s fine, although you might need sun control as well during the day.

I like my plantation shutters, but you want to be open to a view. Plantation shutters are hinged but you don’t have enough room to open them wide and swing that flat.

The sliders can all stack behind each other but you would still have an obstruction.

For me, your windows don’t have any design elements of their own, so I feel

they need something.

I hate plantation shutters they block light and view and look heavy in most spaces. If sun and heat are issues then just do solar shades the control both and allow the view also give daytime privacy but unfortunately not night time privacy. I usually combine the shades with drapes for nighttime. I love bare windows in contemporary homes but to make any more suggestions I would need to know a bit more about your style. That is where idea books are helpful.

I haven't quite decided what look I'm going for 100% yet but I know I want to use the dining table I have a little sample of in these inspiration boards I have been putting together- it was my grandparents' table. I ordered the chandelier and island lights too. I think I like a bright, pretty, classic, a little coastal/ cottage but not too much, and relatively neutral or light blues. I'll have white shaker cabinets with a marble looking quartz countertop.
