Will you be using the small appliances in the pantry or just storing them there? Any other functionality for the pantry?

I think I would have a pantry cabinet and leave that the hallway to the office... use the area where you show counter in butler pantry as more storage ideas...

I definitely like the butlers pantry better. Seems less awkward and more functional with coffee bar on the other side.

I really like Trish’s suggestion to do a cabinet pantry, regular hallway and then more cabinetry in the hall. Same amount of storage but a better flow.

Second preference is to the door in from the kitchen, and close off the passage to the office. Then you can setup the coffee station in the pantry.

You can have both... make a hallway... keep coffee bar but smaller....pocket door into office, pocket door into pantry... i would hate a pantry i couldn’t access directly from the kitchen..and who knows you may change your mind about what goes in there ...i tried in red to show changes.

A pantry is primarily a place to store things related to the kitchen, even when it is called a “butler’s pantry”. In your first diagram, the pantry is easily accessed from the kitchen and from the office. If the person in the office is also the person doing the cooking, that makes sense. If the person using the office is not the cook, no direct access to the pantry and kitchen is necessary. The pantry MUST be directly accessible to the cook. The first drawing is the best.

I think since we will store fair amount in the pantry that your suggestion of direct access makes sense. And make that short wall a coffee nook to maybe combine both ideas?

Id wall off the door from pantry to office unless you plan to use the office for dining. Make it just a pantry not a pantry/hallway hybrid.

With the turn I think it’s not a great butlers pantry. I feel like a burners pantry works better as a straight shot. So either the second drawing or the first with no pass through. If you eliminate the pass Through in drawing 1 you might also make the pantry a little smaller and give a little space back to the kitchen

The area marked office is actually our current formal dining room that we rarely use for dining so turning into 2nd office/library.

Need access to the office otherwise have to go thru the other side of the house... that’s why I did the little jog with pocket door

Have you considered making it just a pantry that is 4-5’ deep with a counter along the back wall and shelving on the sides? That is still a very large pantry without a hallway running through it. Plus you would have storage on the wall with the door since you have about 7’ .

If you are going to use it as an office, is there a need for short access to the kitchen? I would just have a hallway behind the pantry.

Also I know you didn’t ask, but I am sitting on my back deck as I am looking at your post. For 2 chairs and a small table in between you would need 8’ minimum for your porch. 6’ is very narrow for any use. You can check at the store for patio furniture, arrange it how you would want and then measure.

So the main question is where would you like to access that office from? Just the front French doors or kitchen too? Then must have entrance into pantry from the kitchen...that is what it’s for

Point well taken with the porch depth. Our architect thinks it’s enough to get some chairs in and will be screened in. There’s a new larger deck for grilling etc off to the right of the porch that I cut off drawing for simplicity.
We’ve gone back and forth about the office entry issue. Probably easier just to close it off I guess

Depends on if you just want the one entrance. That would be a pain to walk all the way around to get in and out of there in my opinion

I don't know the solution to this, but I would definitely not like having people walk through my pantry - in either configuration - to get to the office. If you plan to use the office as a dining room, it's even worse. I think of a butler's pantry as an area that is more closed off to guests. I would keep tweaking the layout.

Some random thoughts. I like the first butler's pantry layout if you can change the doors to pocket doors, maybe tweak per below. Personally, if I were working in the office and wanted a cup of coffee, I would not want to walk far to the kitchen.

I think the small deck is good. I was at an architecture open house in my town, and one of the houses had the most cozy deck ever and it was just under 6 X 8. Great for that morning coffee especially if there is something interesting to look at and in a temperate climate. Not sure if you have either of those. How do you access the deck? If you aren't a sit outside kind of person, I would drop it.

No matter what you do to the kitchen of pantry, use drawers on bottom cabinets, not cabinet doors.
