Comments (5)I had a "Lena" that overwintered in a sheltered spot outside in portland and we had Ice and snow too this year. I also had a "clair De lune" that overwintered, out side, and I have heard that it it only marginally hardy. I know you didnt want to join one, but as another forum member pointed out the other day, the web site for the northwest fuschia society has a proven hardy list for our area. They have pictures, I have had great luck with this sight. As well, one reader of this forum who resides in Alaska was able to get some special fuschias sent to her from "Moniers country gardens". They are reported to have one of the largest selections of fuschias in the pacific north west. They are not my personal favorite as much as"Fesslers" but They mail, and I dont think Fesslers do.The combination of finding the ones you like at the NEFS sight, and then ordering them from Moniers, might be the ticket. Hope this helps. NO one should have to go throughlife with out a few fuchsias :)...See MoreFuchsia magellanica versus Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt'
Comments (18)I grow both of these along with many others. The hardy magellanicas are bushes planted in the ground in full sun -- when well-fed and watered over the summer, it is loaded with flowers and attracts many hummers. On colder winters, they sometimes die back to the ground but sprouts fast when it warms up. I grow the upright Gartenmeisters in big pots. It is less hardy and needs care to overwinter, which I don't bother since I can buy well-rooted starts in 2" pots for 50 - 99 cents in spring. If you can't find them locally, you might consider mail-order... I did a google search and a dozen vendors popped up. Also, don't forget plants that are similar to Gartenmeister, like Koralle or Firecracker. Look for red or orange triphylla types. Firecracker is particularly nice with its variegated foliage, and looks great with white tuberous begonias. I like to grow upright fuchsias with trailing types at their base. A nice combo is Koralle or Gartenmeister in the center with Autumnale and magellanica aurea at their base, with sweet alyssum or salmon impatiens as fillers. (Autumnale has gorgeous red/orange/lime green leaves, magellanica aurea is lime/yellow leaves.)...See MoreEastside Fuchsia Show
Comments (29)zzepherdogg, thank you for the compliment of attributing to me far greater knowledge of hardy fuchsias than I possess :-) Unfortunately, my experience with these great plants is limited to the ones I grow personally and to those I bring in to sell at the nursery and they tend to be the relatively more common forms and those that exhibit reliable hardiness in our climate. It is interesting to see the hardiness values attributed to these plants by various fuchsia sites. I think we in the PNW enjoy a pretty benign climate rather well suited to growing a lot of hardy fuchsias but not all will make it with the same degree of vigor. Interestingly, both Double Otto and Lord Byron are listed by most sources as half hardy (whatever that means) but I know folks that have grown DO with ease. My feeling is that if you admire the plant regardless of listed hardiness, grow it, but until you are sure of its establishment and reliablity, it may be prudent to provide winter protection. The loss will not break the bank and you could very well be rewarded with a tough, great performing addition to your garden....See Moredamask_rose_zone9b
