I Used Citric Acid to Clean My Washer

The only problem (and I guess it's really not a "problem") is detergent (Tide powder) residue ABOVE the water line. I was unsure how the citric acid was going to help since it was above the water line but I used it anyway and sure enough, it did nothing to remove it. Just used a wet microfiber cloth and little elbow grease and it's good as new. What does the citric acid clean down deeper in the washer? I don't see anything that needs cleaning but maybe I just can't see it.
