Downside of Alside Mezzo or Sheffield?
Comments (3)Only rich people can afford to buy cheap windows. The mezzo frame is flimsy and designed cheaply. The Sheffield is extremely bulky, has a horrible sill design, and looks cheap. After all the negativity you have read regarding alside products, i am taken aback as to your consideration of the product. The soft lite is a much better product as is the sunrise. Fyi, the sunrise will have a slimmer frame than the mezzo and its built MUCH better. I think you already know the answer to your question. Comments (2)Assuming you have actually seen samples of both windows, the Simonton would be the better buy. The Ultramaxx is a window that hasn't been redesigned for many years and is lacking in many ways starting with it's overblown boxy look. If you have seen a sample you will realize it reduces the glass more than any other window on the market that I'm aware of. It also employs and 80's designed snap-in pocket sill. Pocket sills allow water to drain through the frame and with the water also comes pollen, atmospheric dirt and debris and even dead insects. Given enough time the weep system on the window can become clogged with debris allowing water to fill up inside the frame leading to eventual mold and mildew. Additionally Solar60 glass has either 1 or 2 layers of LoE. I would also add that Alside does not have a great reputation for consistent quality. Simonton Reflections 5500 has a co-extruded sill that has 3 steps in it, a much more intelligent design that allows rain to drain without entering the inside of the frame. This design eliminates the possibility of gunk clogging inside the frame. The LoE 366 glass gives you 3 layers of LoE which reduces the Solar Heat Gain. This is important if you live in a warm part of the country. Since you didn't say what kind of spacer you were quoted, I will assume it was Super Spacer since that is what is offered by Simonton with the 366 glass. You also have a 1" IGU included. Super Spacer is a non-conductive Silicon foam Spacer which is specifically engineered to expand and contract with the glass, therefore reducing the possibility of a glass seal failure and minimizing the potential for argon gas leakage. Plus Simontons customer service is absolutely top notch. Alside can be very difficult to deal with if a warranty issue arises. Often taking a great deal of time and effort to get warranty issues resolved....See MoreIs the Alside Mezzo really that bad?
Comments (16)Thanks, while I respect the Okna, there are too many issues with the local Okna dealer, first being minim 5 windows and constant price increases and long wait times. We are not in Okna's normal area so they only ship windows when they can fill a trailer. The Vytex dealer has a solid reputation and has been great to work with so while the Okna may be a better window I am not as comfortable dealing with the Okna dealer. Also for my use case AI and good install are my focal points as most of my windows get little of no sun. The Sunrise were way too expensive....See MoreAdvice on Alside Mezzo down vs Harvey Classic up
Comments (34)It wasn't specified and I wasn't asked about brands, although I did get a choice of a few window styles. I studied it and the door seems ok, installation looks quite good. Some casings were painted and they contained lead, so they had to be replaced. Here's a collage of the work in progress as of today: 1. After removing the storms some exterior areas are now exposed. Looks like these open edges may need to be wrapped? 2. Sticker confirms Reflections 5500, noticeable 1/4" gap above this center window, slightly damaged corners on this window (see #9) and it's missing the top plastic rail that all the other windows have. Frankencasing on left. All windows are in place but seem loose (wobble when pushed), so I think there is more installation to do. 3. Another window, noticeable gap on top and left, wobbly, not finished. 4. 2-piece center Frankencasing (centers only, others are 1-piece). Also note missing top plastic rail on right vs left. 5. Original center belly casing. 6. Top plastic rail, missing on center window in #2. 7. Replacement apron from molding cut on angle. 8. Original apron, showing craftsmanship. 9. One set of triple windows in context. You can currently see light through the upper gap in center window, not noticeable so much in this photo. Also note damage on right corner (and to a lesser extent left corner) on the center window. Possibly dropped and the plastic railing shattered off. Looks relatively minor, but I think that rail plays a part in filling these gaps? Amazing how much glass you lose with replacement windows, especially so with thick frames like on the Reflections 5500....See Moremoonmtn83
