A rose for all the Fathers! Happy Father's Day to all the Dads, Step-Dads, Mom-Dads, Grand-Dads, especially to those who can't celebrate and HUG in person.

In WW-II my now 99 year old father-in-law flew a B-17 plan christened the Rose of York, which inspired us to plant a Rose of York (alba semi-plena) in his honor. Well, the first try was a bust, when the rose bloomed it was a red moss! After searching far and wide, last year we finally acquired this from Palatine. I'm a little afraid of how big this will grow, grafted on multiflora, but that's a another story. Of course it blooms on old wood so this is our first bloom. It was worth the long wait!

We were looking forward to surprising Dad with the rose in full bloom on father's day but sadly due to the quarantine we can't visit in person. It will be even more wonderful when he sees it next year. "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow"

Thank you for posting this picture of this rose. I had one at my other house. It can be quite pretty, and it can get rather lanky in growth habit. Good luck with this rose. It should be fairly sturdy.

My father had a farmer's heart and loved to grow things. He planted and maintained a rose garden for my mother for over 40 years. He is the one who taught me about hybrid tead and I miss him very much! He died in 2007, and never saw me making mu rose garden. I feel his presence when I am working in my roses now, especially if I am doing something not the way he showed me. Happy Father's Day! I miss you! .

What a beautiful rose and lovely photo of you. May your dad have many years to visit this rose in person. My dad has been gone 60 years, but I still remember him as clearly as if it was yesterday. He grew some lovely roses, too. Diane

PS--I'm reading "The Daughter of Time", sometimes called the best mystery ever written (in 1951, Josephine Tey, author). It's a possible solution to the Richard lll supposed murder of the little princes imprisoned in the Tower of London. Richard was the last of the Plantangenets, and the War of the Roses ended with him. Your rose was the House of York's symbol. Boy, I hope I got that right.

Love your story and your rose and it's nice putting a face to your name. Roses have so much more meaning when you can connect them with someone or something. i hope you will be able to hug your father-in-law soon and show him this rose planted in his honor. God bless him for his service to our country. As the years go by, I have more and more respect for those brave men and women.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers on this site and especially to your father-in-law. What a lovely tribute to him. Last year I planted a seven sisters from my dad in Maine since he expressed his regret at not taking the plant from his Homestead when they sold it. I am so hoping it will Bloom for him this year after spending a long and lonely 6 months in Florida. He said it was planted at his house by his grandmother since she was one of Seven Sisters.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers here! Vaporvac - awwww :) that is wonderful that you planted Seven Sisters for your dad! And his mom was one of seven sisters! Wow! There is a mountain in Alberta called Seven Sisters...because there are (or were) 7 peaks on the mountain.

Ratdogheads - Gorgeous, gorgeous blooms!!! And the whole bush is really well grown! My daughter gave me a velvet Christmas ornament this year that had the red rose of Lancaster on one side and the white rose of York on the other. It was a cool present!
