@Patricia Colwell I have this piece but haven't brought it up yet as it is quite large and I wanted to try some other things instead. The artwork below is 51" x 41", so it would only possibly work on the left wall in the photos, which is 61" long. Its 2 1/8" deep and I worried with this one that it would stick out too much off the wall as it's a walk way there to the powder room! The rug is leather/cowhide with metallic paint on the spots where they drop acid, it's a common style of cowhide. It looks better in real life than the photos definitely, but I might skip a rug altogether in this room. I will probably try it and see how it looks, and I will post photos if I do. The art work is quite boring, haha. I was trying to keep it very neutral and light, but not boring!!

Yep, it sure is awkward! The first thing I would is suggest is to turn your island so it is vertical. While I don't see how this gets you seating for another stool. it will give you better clearances between the island and the sink. It also allows you to bring the island down closer to the stove. A former kitchen of mie had this setup with the island right behind the space between the stove and the sink, it was very convenient to simply pivot from the sink and find more work space. Now... about your funky little ell... How about bringing the refrigerator up on the same plane as the stove, next to the long empty wall. Then in the space between the stove and the fridge, install a "secret" pantry door and turn the whole ell into a pantry! Like this... Nicole

Would it be feasible to 'fill in the blank' in the area of the window you spoke of removing? You could extend the kitchen into that space and have the minimum aisles and island with seating. If you need a support post for a new beam, it could go between the sink and range. You'd need to use a narrow base cabinet on each side of the post, but the space in front could be used as a slot for cutting boards. Short wall and sink area would stay m/l as is. Normally I'd put the DW on the other side, but when the door is open it would interfere with traffic from the entry. Adding a sink to the island, to make that the primary prep space, would help. This is rotated, and not exactly to scale: If another support post is necessary, it could be added on the back of the island, and cabinets rearranged, but only three seats would be used: It would be nice to have some counter space beside the fridge, so the MW could go in an upper cabinet: ETA, a quick idea using the existing footprint, but it would mean adding plumbing and possibly some imaginative venting if you can't go straight up: NKBA guidelines New to Kitchens? To start, pull your dining table away from the wall a bit as it’s too crunched up. Why is your sofa in the middle of the room? Push that back against the wall, get an upholstered chair, coffee table (round to break up all the vertical lines in your space) and rug (rectangular). Or you could place a sofa table with some lamps behind the sofa (but still push the sofa back toward the wall). Next to the sofa you will have room for something to contain your shoes. Get something tall like a bench with storage and hooks since this will double as your entryway. Also, how about some art for your walls?
