Pinks, Purples and More

These are some blooms from today and the previous two days. I really got behind on cropping and sizing my photos.

Jurrasic Pink was new last fall. A friend on another forum sent it to me as a gift when he read I'd like to use it in my pink hybridizing program. It's a very large bloom - 7+ inches in my garden - on scapes of around 40 inches this year.

Love seeing Zuzu in that beautiful setting! Sounds like Jurassic Pink is a good one, so many pretty ruffly daylilies seem to be short, at least most that I have. My favorite may be I'm gonna Love You Through It

Masha: This is the third spring that I have them. I grew them in pots the first year and have been in this location since last spring. I don't know if they cover the five foot obelisk. If they do, fine if not the obelisks are pretty enough that I don't mind seeing them. I think Hoovb grows CM as a short climber. Maybe she knows how tall they get. HOE got rusty last fall. I only defoliaged it and did not spray it, I do not like to fuss. I guess the spurs lived on the plant and infected the new leaves this year. I do not want any rose that needs spraying so they are goners this fall. I have plenty of similar color roses not to miss them. The stuff that is growing under roses are some sort of wild garlic or onion. They have very small bulbs very deep under ground and they multiply by seed and bulb. It lives through every condition, and I cannot rid of them if my life was depended on it. I have to live with them. FJ

I have some stunningly RED princess asters, Bonnie, but they apparently won't breed true to type. One of those others listed above was described as "scarlet" in the catalog. Nancy, the little old lady who used to live down the road from us had volunteer asters (I'm pretty sure they were "Crego"). She also had volunteer dictamnus, petunias and annual poppies. Even tho' she was 80, she took real good care of her yard and it was bright with these flowers. She gave us some poppy seed and when they grew, DW asked me what we'd say to the police about how we came to have opium poppies growing in our yard. I said we could just point down the road at Rosalee's house. Rosalee is gone now but her poppies are still in our yard every year. S'

Zuzu’s got the best seat in the house! I think my eye catcher today is Pink Aloha, I adore the true pink daylilies. What a great gift you received, hope you get some nice babies from it. Midnight Castle is lovely too, such a nice deep purple and a great white edge to boot.

You beat me to it posting Pink Aloha. I had my first good bloom today but didn't have time to post it. I still adore it and from your pictures most people can see why. ........Jurassic Pink is a beauty. I think Nan had that a few years back when it was brand new. I'll be interested in your take on it for vigor and colorfastness.........Midnight Castle and Pistil Whipped are good ones too........Kisses to Zuzu in front of a lovely garden view.........Maryl

Jurrasic Pink is gorgeous. 40 inch scapes is super tall. Nice garden pic with Zuzu.

Sherry and Julia - The first blooms on Jurassic Pink were very splotchy. But my primary goal in growing it is not the pretty blooms. It's the genetics. It's already set a couple of pods from my 8-inch seedling, Dancing Flamingo X Bubblegum Delicious, and note the pollen on the pistil. My Michigan friend, who grows it successfully there, was incredibly thoughtful to gift me with several fans.

I love the pinks--Pink Aloha, I'm Gonna Love You Through It, and Manny Augustine (which I consider rose pink). Jurassic Pink is a nice flower. We grew it but it didn't flourish for us so we sent it south as a part of downsizing effort.

Hoosier Nan - Yes, Maney Augustine is a rose pink bitone. It's too bad Jurassic Pink didn;t flourish in your climate. I don't know how long I'll keep it, since it seems to be a splotcher.
