Andersen 100 and Pella 250 - same quote, which to pick?

Hi all,

I got a few quotes for Andersen and Pella Windows from various dealers on replacement windows: (material only, no labor).

Sliding

Black

In-between grills

- Pella 350 are about $13k for 18 windows.

- Pella 250 and Andersen 100 are both about $9k for 18 windows.

Average window size is 34" x 34"

Which one would you all recommend going for?

Should I get quotes from other brands? if so, which brands?

Andersen anything before anything Pella. Just my .02............................

Maybe look into vinyl such as Sunrise, Softlite, Polaris or OKNA and or Marvin Essentials if you are ok with fiberglass. The vinyl will have higher performance values/ratings.

The Pella‘s have 2 panels that operate vs only one on the 100. The 350’s are way overpriced, and. Even the other 2 are kinda of high. I would suggest getting some other quotes. Inbsluder configuration I don’t think the Pellas would be to bad since all these type of operators us use a pocket sill, but I would go Anderson. The brands MWM suggested are good but are typically sold by limited dealers that only sell them installed within the exception of the Marvin which can be typically found at old school type lumber yards not box stores. If you are going to Home Depot for the Andersen’s have them price them through there “bid room” and for better pricing buy them when Menards is having 11% off and Home Depot will match that. Does not apply if you have no Menards in your area.

I don't know the size of windows you are buying so I can't comment on the prices but I can tell you that the Andersen 400 TiltWash is not in the same league as the Marvin Ultimate and should have been priced about 20 to 25% less. The TiltWash doesn't even have a cladding on the sash, just a high-tech PPG paint coating. Andersen's 400 WoodWright has the same frame but a composite plastic/wood fiber Fibrex sash cladding (like Trex) so it is closer to the Ultimate and should be about 15% cheaper. I would not use Pella ProLine windows even if they were the equal of the Ultimate; Pella as a company is unreliable IMHO. You certainly made the right decsion given those choices. If the Ultimate has a flaw it is the sill nosing which is ridiculously thin and does not project enough to act as a drip (not that any modern nail-fin windows do). I strongly recommend adding a PVC sill nosing from Advanced Trimwright (ATW) or a similar product. Extending the sill under the jamb trim makes a handsome job and avoids sill the waterproofing problems I have seen so often.

A quality vinyl window with a Bronze or Brown exterior is not an issue at all. Anything Pella would be a non-starter in my opinion (CR reports not with standing). Andersen 100's are a decent window. Milgard as a whole gets plenty of good reviews from the western part of the country so I would not be afraid of them (only thing that scares me is that they were purchased by MI recently).

The quote was provided in Somerset county, NJ. I asked for a price breakdown to door and windows, because patio door is a must and windows could be optional that is why they came up separate. Also any suggestion for a built-mini blind to the Okna Elegante door? Would it degrease the weather efficiency? I didn't find any discussion about the embedded mini blind in the forum.

Just an update if anyone in the future bumps into a similar situation. Got the quote back on A-100 Picture window with Tempered glass. Marvin Essential is still 1.95x (down from 2.5x) more than A-100. All other window types (casement / gliders ) are in the same price range, with less than $100 difference between the two. @Lora P Thank you. You made a valid point, I will check on Elevate pricing for the same size. But what I understood for picture windows to be a standard size has to be <= 48 sq.ft for most manufacturers. These windows are required only on rear side with no other windows on same wall.. so might be OK to upgrade ( i guess !!) As much as I hate to mix the brands, switching to A-100 definitely will save few grand. Might have to look for other factors like Warranty etc before making a decision.

If you go with Andersen 100 series, make sure you follow installation instructions to a T. All of our 100 series frames have bowed after a year and the rep came out and said since we nailed every other hole, not every hole, and put the stucco right up to the window frame, not leaving a 1/4” gap, that they are not responsible for the window bowing.
