Comments (40)Brilliant ideas, gang. I love the look of concrete facing on the chimney, and it would make it fit the rest of the house so much better. The brick may be covering the original block chimney, it is not brick all the way to the basement. It is obvious there was a wood burning stove in the kitchen and maybe facing a fireplace in the living area when the house was built. no trace of either now. We will be getting a high efficiency boiler soon so the chimney will be non functional at that point. I love the idea of painting that front gable cement color as well. The door you see in the photo is the screen door. There is a solid wood door behind that, not visible since it is open in the photo. These photos were taken by the previous owner. The concrete "bricks" used for the porch and planter are very light pink in "real life" and really do not match the chimney at all. Awesome ideas about the metal posts and rails on the porch.. The idea of using metal pipe is outstanding too! Spouse and I discussed the idea of adding wrought iron details to the planting areas in front. I agree it needs depth and contrast, I think the former owners tore up the original foundation plantings because they were overgrown and getting ugly. I have red and white flower pots and am thinking just touches of red in the plantings and using the red pots might give me nice contrast with the greys. we have 4 metal rockers from the late 40's /early 50's. Two would look great on the front porch. They are painted green, but paint can change. Ideas are forming. dang I love this forum! thanks to everybody, your comments and compliments and your creative input are doing good for mental stimulation, feeding my psyche and my soul! This conversation is getting long, i'll find the previous owners interior pictures and put them in another post....See MoreCurb Appeal for Cape Cod Home
Comments (41)The one permanent part of the whole equation is the warm burgundy red brick. It won't change, even if you change everything else. And the blue color of the Grey Mist is way too cool of a contrast with the warm brick. It's pretty dreadful, actually. If you must choose a grey, the darker Monterrey Taupe would be a much better choice as it has the right undertones to work with the brick instead of against it. The other warm color choices to consider would be one of the creams. I don't think any of the browns are right. And when you do the roofing, you do not want a true black or gray, you want an extremely dark brown that reads black or gra. Something like the popular "espresso" furniture color. That little hint of red-brown will keep the whole first impression cozy and warm....See MoreIdeas on updating exterior from traditional to modern?
Comments (37)Thanks again for your feedback and input everyone! Olychick, I'm thinking color everything, though on the fence about trim (dark vs light). I imagine we could start by painting the body of the house first, see how it looks, then proceed with the trim. I agree that the dark trim helps blend the bow/bay windows. Very light paint with dark trim works also but would rather avoid too light of a main color. Just personal preference. Cmarlin20, we like contemporary and aren't particularly attached to the current look of the house. I think we're just afraid to commit to painting the brick as it'd be more-or-less permanent. But so far painting or removing the brick seems the way to go....See MoreNeed suggestions for Minimal Traditional Style/California Cottage
Comments (8)If you do a lot of the landscape yourself, you can save lots. rototill that grass and kill the weeds first. (otherwise they just come back) I use a weed killer two weeks before ripping it out. now is the perfect time to plant grass. so either grab some sod or prepare the soil and do seed. To have someone come out and resod your front (is there irrigation already? I hope?) would be about 800-1000K, As for paint, you could keep the yellow stucco and just do the the shutters and white siding yourselves. Or, do the stucco white, black siding and maybe red shutters. Or blue siding and black shutters. lots of combos. Replace the posts w/solid wood columns. do a nice redwood, 4x4, sealed w/UV clear coat sealer. we did a xeriscape on our rental house. off to the right are rose bushes. they are Iceberg roses. all white, and flower all of the time. they are pretty hardy. do some black bark mulch as well. as for the succulents, most of them came from my yard or the neighbors yard. I just cut them and stick them in the ground. they are everywhere around SoCal,,,no need to spend money and buy them. just ask someone for a piece. heck, I'll give you tons if you come by and get them!...See MoreB D
