Wall ovens and blasting of hot air into kitchen
Comments (76)My landlord just put a new GE slide in stove (cooktop and combo oven) as I complained about the old oven blowing hot air out the front and also that it only seemed to be on "convection" even though there wasn't a convection mode on it. Certain foods never came out like they should, such as cracker breads and quiche (I had to overcook the top to make certain the middle of the crust was cooked). But this oven blows hot air, too -- only out the back! I made cracker breads last night which bake on a pizza stone at 450 and the house became an oven, as well. If they have to do this to keep the high tech elements from over heating, then maybe this isn't such a good design. Maybe they should go back to the old designs. And I ask -- how can this be energy efficient? If hot air is blowing into your house in summer, then the air conditioning is running to counter-act it. If unnecessary heat is being expelled from the oven, then how is that efficient because the oven is surely producing more heat than it needsk or is healthy for the electronic components. And now I wonder if it means that air is still blowing around in the oven, giving it a convection mode by default. I'm going to have to experiment with it to see. And one more thing, on this model, as soon as I even put a tea kettle on to boil, cold air blows out the vent in the back. I had to move my pet bird. Why am I thinking that men design these products....See MoreKitchen Layout help, please -esp fridge placement
Comments (20)Hi - sorry about your tooth! I hope everything is ok. I have been trying to think about how we prep/cook/clean up now and you bring up some good points. Currently, we have a galley and the sink is opposite the cooktop so I am used to that. It's small so I have 3.5' on one side of the sink and less than 2' on the other side and that is IT for prep/clean up/whatever else :) The cooktop is flanked by our wall oven and refrigerator and has less than 12" on either side (1962 codes!). Originally, we had planned to have the main sink in the island and then an eating nook under the windows and probably no prep sink. We couldn't make the nook work so then ended up with counters there and it made more sense, or so we thought, to move the main sink to look out the windows and to free up the island. I kind of assumed I'd do a lot of the work at the island and would get a bigger prep sink. However, now that I walk through those scenarios it seems kind of weird because the dishwasher will be on the other wall. For instance, making school lunches - I was going to have a drawer for their containers/boxes in the island, but assuming I use a knife and cutting board, would I then wash the cutting board in the prep sink but move the knife to the main sink? Seems odd. Am I over thinking this? I also envisioned prepping dinner at the island and on the range while my kids do homework on the other side. Regarding husbands, it's great having one who likes to cook even if he doesn't have much time for it :) After seeing a brief demo, and thinking about what we eat, it started to make sense. We steam or roast vegetables most nights and then grill or roast some type of meat/fish/chicken, etc. He fell in love with the Miele automation but I am skeptical that I will take the time to really learn it, especially once school starts up and our schedule gets busy. The Electrolux was my choice for a regular oven! We also seriously consider the Electrolux gas range. We still have time so am hopping to go to some of the combi steam oven classes or demos before making a final decision. It must feel good to have your appliances mostly decided. Comments (14)I attached the entire floor plan here. I have also made 3 more alternatives per everyone’s suggestions. Please keep giving me your valuable advices!. I will try to answer each question. But first and foremost, I want to thank everyone who is reading my post and trying to help me with my questions. I am so grateful for you all! 1. To Diana Bier Interiors, LLC : I am not a designer, I wish I was though😉 We have worked with an architect firm for quite some time for the entire house renovation. We have tried everything to make the best out of the limited space for the kitchen and a powder room (a must for us) on the 2nd floor. Finally, we came up with this general idea. I would love to hear from our Houzz community. BTW, venting the range hood is not an issue per our contractor. My main concerns are those 6 questions listed in my first post. 2. To Lisa Dipiro : the reason for 36” walkway to the right side of the island: there is really not much traffic going on as all action is taking place on the other side of the island. So, we chose to give more space to the island. As for the fridge, we are using Sub-zero and its doors can be opened 90 degree, so no space needed for that part of the wall. Would you think this still works (walkway)? . 3. To clt3 : we cooked one turkey in the past 25 years. So, we decided to go with XXL Miele Combi-steam oven (24”W x 24”H) which can fit a 15 -20 lb bird if we really want to cook another turkey in the next 25 years. Heard that the combi-steam oven is amazing:) 4. To mama goose_gw zn6OH : wow, amazing mind. Shrinking the island, moving the peninsular to give a full counter around the corner wall! Should I try to put the wall ovens against that wall? I did a few more drawings. Your thoughts? Agree with no bar sink and a 30” range top. 5. To dan1888 and mama goose_gw zn6OH : great thinking! We have tried to turn the island by 90 degree again and again in the past. But the distance btw the range and island is at 5 to 6ft, even if the main counter row is deepened. We are afraid 5-6ft is too wide. I am only 5’2” and plays the main chief in the house currently. 6. To live_wire_oak : love your philosophy. Yes we wanted to have EVERYTHING in this small kitchen don't we? We will have to give up something here in this space, you are right. 7. To Buehl l: many details I left out at the first post. My bad. Please see the entire floor plan. The walls are pretty much fixed. The “+/-“s or “?”s are due to uncertainties as the entire house is to be rebuilt. We are a family of two, just myself and the hubby. But I am a mother who is longing for her grown up children to come back home on weekends or one day perhaps with their wives and my grandchildren too. Food prep/cooking, entertaining is all in our plans when we retire. I do not like people watching me to cook. The husband wants to learn baking when he retires but that may never happen as he loves his job too much. Thanks for all the links on kitchen design! Very helpful....See MoreSammie J
