The Miele speed ovens will serve quite well as a microwave so long as you can live without the popcorn/defrost/dedicated functions available with one button push. The unit does have a minute plus button that will, with one push, start the microwave, so you can do a coffee reheat, melt butter, etc. But for more complex microwaving, you need to go into the menu structure to select power, duration, etc. But it is an excellent microwave. Instead of turning the food on a turntable, it turns the antenna! The big charm of the things is that they can convection bake, broil, or microwave, or all of the above, concurrently. There are modes you can dial up that will heat up the oven cavity using the heating elements and then inject some microwaves periodically, greatly speeding up the baking, but with results like the dish was baked in a standard oven. Our speed oven has taken over as the go-to oven in our house for most stuff. It won't do pizza very well (you need bottom heat for that) but for most dinners where you are serving one baked dish with sides, it rocks. Here's the deal, though. If you decide on a speed oven you will have to plan for a 220-240V circuit to power it.

No. Fori had a slide out hood over her cooktop that occupied a smaller space under the cabinet. Search on her name with the box beneath the thread titles and you should find something about it, or give a shout out. She pops in here often enough. It's a real hood. Okay, I'm confused about wok/range. I thought you were talking about the big Viking wok burner rangetop. Do you mean a complete range with oven? I'd think it would be great to have gas at a lake house also for if/when the electricity goes out. For canning, you might also consider putting the wok burner outside. Put in a sink and counter and a barbecue and you'd have a great outdoor kitchen. :) You could also use it for the deep fried turkey if your family is into that--or you can use a turkey frier burner for canning outside. And if your outside isn't a pleasant place to do your canning that answers the last question about the hood--go for a good one. Go for a long one. Go for good make-up air. Live the good life. I should mention that I have 15" Wolf two burner domino and 24" Gaggenau induction (straight from Europe) under a 48", 1200 cfm hood, with cabinets above. I get what you're aiming for, and I think it's a great idea! I think the same way. :) If the gonzo hood/MUA system is too much however (work, money or combination), I do think the outdoors option for the gas is worth exploring. You can still do waterbath canning indoors during inclement weather, and have the big burner outside for pressure canning. That just makes the wok a fair weather thing, but if it's snowy, isn't it more stew weather than stir fry anyway?

O.T. Do not disrespect or underestimate small kitchens. The original kitchens on my tract house street were horrible by current standards, but these twinsie little pullman kitchens with doors on both ends nevertheless allowed post-WWII moms to make family meals from scratch, can and freeze garden produce, and host card parties, garden club meetings, and extended families at holidays. I've been told as much by the older residents. DH and I remodeled the original so nicely without adding an inch of actual space that it served me from 1976 to last year when we finally took a sledgehammer to it. Guests at my dinner parties joked that it was like the clown car from which so much entertainment emerged even if it appeared to hold so very very little. But I had to have rules and one was that no one could be in the space with me when I said I needed to be alone. We installed a long countertop which allowed me to plate things before serving and which accepted mounds of dirty dishes afterwards. Cleanup was also a one-person activity. No one was allowed to stand around to talk; guests could stand at either door if they really wanted to, but no, no, no, do not come in. The work triangle was a long obtuse triangle that covered the entire room. But the zones were there, crisp and sharp and functional.

Thanks everybody. Now that I know 24" is available and a standard I was able to find several. I don't know why they don't show up on the normal range list at the appliance dealer sites. I had to search for 24 and range to find any. Thanks for the link too to the compact appliance site. Brought me back memory lane. I had this in my first apartment inside Stockholm's city limits.
