What would you do? Help with Exterior Paint, pic included
Comments (2)Look into something that blends with either the roof (greys and grey-greens) and accent with brick colors or blend with the bricks (red/browns). Is the siding a true white? The door is a black hole, isn't it? Anything but black would be an improvement. I would paint above the garage door something that blends with the bricks, even faux paint to match the bricks, to get rid of that odd bit of paneling. Then paint the actual door to match the shutters....See MoreRaised Ranch Exterior Needs Help! What would you do?
Comments (6)Thank you Doug and Denita for your ideas. Doug, I love your landscaping ideas and the garage awning change. I had not thought of making it dark like that, but it looks really nice. Denita, I shuddered when I saw your comment about my shutters. I always thought mine were sized right. I walk around my neighborhood cringing at ill sized shutters. Do you think mine are too long? wide? And I agree about the ones on the large window. I would love to take them off, but it will leave holes in the siding which I think will be uglier than the shutters...Those might have to stay until new siding. Thank you both!...See MoreWhat would you change to make the exterior more interesting/appealing?
Comments (14)Here are some suggestions... 1. Situate the door so that it faces the driveway, remove the deck on the right side and replace the existing door with a matching window. 2. Build a small porch over the door, and change the siding underneath the porch and to the left side to be millwork and/or board and batten. The change-up in siding is for visual interest. Make the stone steps and floor extend to the left beyond the porch. 3. Add windows to the side of the house facing the driveway. Make sure they are large enough. Black windows would look nice with a mostly white house...kind of gives it a modern farmhouse feel. Make sure the millwork around the windows is generous and matches the style of the house. The four in the back of the upper storey line up on the leading side of the three on the first storey. The windows to the right follow suit, but in reverse. The matched off-numbered windows add architectural interest. 4. Add larger windows to the right upper storey of the house. 5. Landscape. Define where the driveway stops and the sidewalk to the door starts. Add a stone planter...it complements the brick. Build a boulder retaining wall to help manage the hill to the left of the driveway. Add greenery to soften the amount of pavement. Replace the driveway with pavers and pea gravel. Of course these are all suggestions, and this could be accomplished over time to spread the spend. It could look like this......See MoreWhat would you do to make the exterior not look like such an L shape?
Comments (30)Sorry about the new paint but when the goal is to deemphasize, dark is never good. The L shape is the garage. If you want to play down the garage and up play the HOUSE then the garage door needs to fade not POP. Same with the shutters on the garage. That is quite a substantial window meant to give the illusion of home vs garage..is it safe? If those bushes grow up it would be a perfect place for a criminal to hide/break the window..... I do think adding a front porch/pergola gives the home a friendly feel. Still then you are all sitting in the driveway given your home configuration and that's not always a favorite place....See MoreDesign Girl
