Yikes!!! We've been told it's not if but when we'll get the 'big' one on the coast of BC (Canada). Pretty scary stuff.

I‘ve seen on the news pools and earthquakes, but that must have been wild to experience.

That must have been unsettling. If I were to be in a big earthquake, I'd like to be wearing more than a swim suit ;0)

We've had two here on the Washington coast that caused enough shaking to note. With one, I lost a seal in a 9' dining room window, added some plaster cracks to my then 1926 house. I rode out that earthquake in the doorway to my kitchen with one arm on the door frame and the other against my refrigerator holding it in place.

What I remember most is the noise....it sounded like a train was coming.

We lived through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Never again.....

Kevin told me that this was actually an aftershock from the July 2019 quake in Ridgecrest that we felt. That quake started as a 6 around noon while we were having brunch in Palm Springs, but that was a foreshock to the 7.2 that occurred in the afternoon. This reminds me of when I was shaving in Mexico City during an earthquake there.

I lived through the Northridge quake of 1994, but I was in a larger quake in Mexico City in March 1979.

I lived in a high-rise on Wilshire Boulevard during the 1994 earthquake. As a native Californian, earthquakes never bothered me until that experience. There is something about being 15 floors up that is a bit unsettling.

L.A. is slightly closer to the epicenter than Palm Springs is.

I've never been in a high-rise during an earthquake, but that would definitely disturb me. I've had a lot of dreams about it after the quake in 1979. I was in a fourth story flat in San Francisco for several small quakes, and the height of the building did magnify the effects.

I was near the top floor of what passes for a high rise in San Jose (just a bit less than 20 stories because the downtown area is in the normal airport landing path) during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It was rock and roll time for more than 60 seconds but I somehow found that reassuring - newer buildings are built to move and flex to absorb the energy and by doing so they remain standing. But it was a lot of movement.

For those of you raising teenage girls and trying to guide them to aspire to doing something substantive with their lives, or with teenage girls in the family who could benefit from positive role models and examples, that video serves as a good example of what any young girl should aspire to never do when they get older. Yikes.

Yes, I felt it Lars. I was just saying with all that has been going on the last few months, that all we needed to top it all off was an earthquake. Five minutes after I typed that, it happened! I hope it wasn't the start of more and larger ones.

I am sitting in the part of the house that is on slab and I felt the floor and my chair shift left-right quickly.

Lars - end of that video looked like a horror movie! We live in Massachusetts and have experienced several mild earthquakes, both at night in bed. Our platform bed shook and woke us up.

I grew up in LB and remember the 71 Sylmar earthquake. Woke up to my dresser sliding and and forth. My next earthquake was in Maryland 8 years ago or so at work. It felt like waves under the floor. Everyone ran out of the building——exactly what you’re not supposed to do iirc. Fortunately, it was a one story building and there was no damage.

I didn't feel the quake today but I was outside moving around and working in the yard at 6:30.

We had a local small quake a month or so ago -- epicenter View Park / Windsor Hills 3.5 or so, struck around midnight. I was in the kitchen, and the noise really startled me -- rather loud for a small quake.

The strongest shaking I've experienced since I've been in Venice was from the Ridgecrest quakes last July.

I was around for the Sylmar and Northridge quakes, and was told that I slept through a bad one when I was a young child. My mother had to attend her San Fernando Valley elementary school in tents until damage from the 1932 Long Beach quake was repaired.

I really had no concept of what an earthquake was until experiencing Sylmar.

A few years ago there was a quake in the mountains about 15 miles from me as the crow flies. I heard a huge bang and then the the windows rattled. Soon we were all the phone and everyone heard the bang. Oh, a 42 inch diameter gas pipeline, the largest every built through mountains, is being rammed through about 5 miles from the epicenter. Sound like a good idea to you?

Call me weird but being in a pool during a quake, with no damage of course, would be a blast! So glad everything is okay...so far. I had no idea an aftershock could come a year later.

I am so happy that for the most part fracking has stopped here in OK. Before quakes became an everyday occurrence due to fracking, one night around 9pm, maybe in 2010-11, I was sound asleep in bed while DH was in the LR. This was one of my top 10 "I Love Lucy" moments. The bed started shaking hard enough to wake me up and I knew immediately it was an earthquake, so I ran like crazy to the LR screaming "Earthquake! Earthquake! we need to go outside!" and DH had the audacity to laugh at me! Crooked pictures on all the walls, a couple of cracks in the concrete outside.

FF to 2015 when OK was getting daily earthquakes, some damaging, some not, my DS felt it in his two story house behind us. He called kind of in a panic asking if we felt the quake, and we didn't. DS2 was visiting and was upstairs in the guest room & he didn't feel a thing.

Lars, when I was in Mexico City, such a beautiful place to visit, we watched Nadia Comanici win her gold medals in gymnastics. Then she moved here and married Bart. :)

I'm glad you and Kevin were ok! We had an earthquake here once and it left some cracks in the foundation of the house and some minor cracks in the living room walls that I was able to patch easily but I'm glad it's not a part of regular life.

Being in the pool was sort of fun. Last July, as you can see from the link in my first post, the water in the pool sloshed around quite a bit, and that would have been a bit like surfing if we had been in the pool on our floats during that. I thought it was interesting that I could identify an earthquake in the pool. I've never been outside on the ground during a quake, and I think that would be a very different experience from what I've had so far and might be more difficult to identify. Last July during the foreshock I was walking in the restaurant from the restroom back to our table, and so I did not notice the quake, but everyone who was sitting down did. The wait staff who were walking as I was did not notice it.

The good thing here is that everything is built to earthquake standards and so damage is usually minimal, although furnishings can get moved around during a large quake.

What an interesting experience, even for ya'll who live where earthquakes are more common. I've only felt one -- that August 2011 east coast one -- and that convinced me the Earth. Should. Not. Move.

Incidentally, in that quake, a friend who was walking by the river didn't notice a thing. We were looking out at a small retention pond and it was waving. Went home and our dog's water dish had splashed out (leaving a puddle, they didn't drink it dry). So I guess size of the water "container" matters?

I didn't feel it here, Lars; that must have been a strange sensation for you! I was home in bed for Northridge in 1994 and driving my car in downtown LA during the Whittier earthquake in the 80's. For that one, I wasn't sure if I had a flat tire or if I had been bumped from behind. I looked it the rearview mirror and saw the guy behind me screaming; that's when I noticed the traffic lights swaying and realized what it was.

DD and I were sitting on the couch and felt it. It seemed short to me (thankfully), as by the time I realized what was going on, it was already fizzling out- at least at this distance. Last year's earthquakes were the first DD had ever felt, despite living here all her life, so she is a little keyed up again today and did not sleep well last night.

DH was in the shower and didn't feel it at all.

We lived in Seattle in early 60’s and the seismic reading was given everyday during news. We would feel small jolts . Now we are in Coastal Carolina over a fault line. Not a huge eruption since 1886, but feel small jolts. Once in Seattle the jolt was quite strong and all of our dishes fell in china cabinet. Can’t think about the big one coming.

They're of course talking about it on the news this morning, but we didn't feel a thing here (just east of Pasadena). The first earthquake for me was Sylmar in 1971. They scare the bajeeters out of me. Even watching that makeup video made my pulse race.

Yes, swimming pools definitely can get active during an earthquake!

We had an earthquake in Manhattan, I'm thinking maybe 1985 or so. It was in the early morning and I dreamt that the landlord had put in a loud ice machine outside my door. I woke up to hear that noise and feel my loftbed moving. My first thought was, the noisy neighbor is upstairs, why am I hearing noise from below? But the funniest was my cat, who slept through the whole thing.

That's interesting about the cat, jupidupi. I know dogs can often sense an earthquake shortly before it hits.

Lars, in a weird way, that must have been sort of cool to be in the pool. But it was also kind of scary, right? I have only felt two earthquakes, and one was when I was staying in an LA airport hotel once. The earthquake itself was in a Ridgecrest iirc, and the curtains swayed noticeably. Then the news stations started breaking in with the news.

We have actually had mild tremors here in Alabama. The second one I felt almost went unnoticed. If I had not been sitting at a desk which suddenly vibrated against the chair in front of it, I wouldn’t have known anything happened. The next morning I found out we had an earthquake.

Six months after the Loma Prieta earthquake, I was teaching a class in downtown San Francisco. I was walking back and forth, trying to get some response from the class, when I lost their attention completely. Someone asked, 'Didn't you feel it?" It was a magnitude 6.something quake, one of about 75 aftershocks that day. Several of the people in that class had been stuck in an elevator in the building during the Loma Prieta quake, and they were panicked by that aftershock.This building was adjacent to another, separated by about 4 inches, and during the Loma Prieta quake they banged against each other, and the interior of the other building still hadn't been repaired,

Then there was the time I was in a meeting in Rochester and heard a loud noise, like a herd of elephants running nearby. I thought it was an earthquake, but the person I was meeting reassured me that it was only a nearby train. After I left to drive to the airport, I heard on the car radio that yes, it was an earthquake. Rochester, N.Y.!

North OC and I didn't feel it, but friends down south did. Just another day in Sunny CA!

I might not have noticed the one yesterday if I had not been in the pool. The water moving back and forth gives it away. It was not scary at all because the waves were tiny, but it was sort of fun. A bigger earthquake would have given us bigger waves, of course. We got pretty huge waves in the pool in Culver City during the Northridge quake, and it took quite a while for them to die down. Also, quite a bit of water came out of that pool. Our patio got pretty wet last July, but not yesterday.

Lars, I remember a quake we had on Easter Sunday one year. Not sure but seem to remember the epicenter was Baja. We were at my in-laws house in Bradbury and the pool water went crazy. I was amazed how long it took to calm down. I suppose it could have also been aftershocks we didn't feel.

Being from ND, there's HARDLY EVER been a Quake here! I've never been in one. The N-Central U.S. & into Canada is very stable I guess.
