OTR microwave - higher, lower, or in line with cabinets?
Comments (9)We currently have an OTR microwave - and will with the new kitchen as well. Right now, the micro is lower than the cabinets, only because when our microwave died 2 years ago, we bought a SS one to replace it knowing *someday* we would redo the kitchen and get all SS appliances. Then, the micro arrived and it was bigger than the one it replaced... Anyhoo, I am planning that the new micro will be in line with the bottom of the cabinets, and since I am doing 36" uppers, I am most likely getting an 18" cabinet above it. Since the microwave is also 15" deep, I am also going to get increased depth cabinets for that wall so it is flush. We also want to vent to outside, but don't have that yet so I don't know how that works... Since my husband is pretty tall, I think we will end up having about 21" from top of cooktop to bottom of microwave. I am 5'7" and too much higher than that would be a stretch for me, I think. Comments (5)Do you mean under the counter? We just had this dicussion recently here and you should search for that thread. I am going with a Wolf under counter microwave drawer. Previous house had a regular microwave in the island and we had no problem with the location or using it. Some people hate them placed low. If you have young kids any low appliance can and will be played with, so you might want to pick something with a lock-out feature....See MoreLower Cabinet Drawers Too Wide?
Comments (56)I couldn’t agree more with the latest comments. I only have the best of intensions but at the end of the day, it’s your kitchen. You need to do what works best for you and your family. But I make one my last post for a prep sink. I highly recommend a prep sink on the island as @mama goose_gw zn6OH mocked up with the green lines. You won’t need to cross into the cleaning zone where the kids will be working WHEN you need access to the sink to rinse vegetables or drain a pot of pasta. Personally, I don’t like the thought of carrying a 5+ gallon stock pot (homemade tomato sauce or chicken stock) and risk burning a small child who runs into my legs. I was that child and I am fortunate I only have a burn scar the inside of my ankle; at least on the my front of my body that I can see. This might be going overboard but you can train your family to call out “HOT BEHIND” when ever someone needs to pass through. I come from a large family who likes to cook. I have 3 sisters, 2 foodie BILs, a mom and MIL. We trip over each other in the kitchen and push our way through each other to access to the sink whenever we try making a meal together. As kids I didn't really notice the lack of a prep sink but as adults, I find it more pleasant to cook with them when we each get our own sink. One person can be prepping while another person is washing up. And there’s aways a free sink to wash hands or rinse a glass. It was one of my many must haves. If you still don’t see the need for a prep sink, please at a minimum, look into how much work it will be to add into later if you change your mind down the road. Like, how will it be vented and drained. Do you need a new drain stack or can they tie it into the existing sink drain. Will you have odd shaped bulk heads in the room below the kitchen. Also I’m very glad to hear you’ve decided to move the microwave out of your prep zone. You don’t want someone trying to open the microwave while you're working with a sharp knife in your hands. I know; I'm over the top. I worked in a kitchen before so I’ve seen my share of cuts and burns......See MoreUnder Counter Microwave Help- Drawer or Not?
Comments (13)My daughter has the Sharp drawer and I love it. It is easy to load and unload. I couldn’t give up drawer space in my island so we used the Sharp under the cabinet MW. It mounts with a bracket on the wall. 24” wide and 14” tall, it takes the space of the bottom shelf of a cabinet. The cabinet on top is just shorter. I like the controls at eye level because the other cook in my kitchen has back issues. Of course, safety is an issue with the wall mounted-steaming hot food is pulled out and down towards you-or your children. Since my other cook/ dear husband has back issues, he couldn’t use a regular MW installed on a shelf in the island. Bending over every time to see the controls and bending to put things in and also bending to remove them would be a more difficult task for him. We both wish we could have the drawer, for ease of removing hot dishes. Why don’t you rig up a little stand at the height your MW would be if it is installed under your counter? Something about 20” high and sturdy would be useful as a trial run for your family. Try it for a week and see if it works for you. I almost always do a mock up if I am uncertain how something will work. That’s how I decided my “perfect size” island was 18” too long for my space. But now, after doing a trial run mock-up, I am satisfied I looked at all the options....See Moreskmom
