Painting a 100 year old house-primer question
Comments (4)I bought this Bosch sander exclusively for painting my house. 40-60 grit is great for doing a scuff sand after scrapping all loose paint. Connected to my Festool CT36, it did a great job. https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/boschtools-ocs/random-orbit-sanders-1250devs-27677-p/ The old rule was no oil over latex, but that is no longer true. I would snap some photos and get some feedback from a real paint store. If you scuff sand the previous paint that is in good shape, you technically don't need primer. I think either will work in your situation. Oil will be a better option if you have a lot of exposed wood or heavy stains....See MoreReno/Add on ideas..100 year old house
Comments (7)To make this home a better fit for your needs and preserve the architectural character requires a careful balancing of the floor plan and exterior with your lifestyle needs and budget. You can do a sympathetic addition--one that looks like it was part of the original home--or one is distinctly different. To get it right, you'll need to engage professionals who do that for a living. You may find a remodeler with in-house design resources that has a great portfolio and track record designing and building additions or you may need to hire an independent residential designer or architect. In either case, I recommend you get both the designer/architect and remodeler to collaborate with you from the outset--that gives you the best opportunity to achieve as many objectives as you can within your budget target. Best wishes for a successful project....See Morehelp with exterior of house - 50 years old!
Comments (16)First, get rid of all the shutters (especially on the large lower one), and those silly doors where the garage used to be! What you could use is a garage door like this,,,,,it would bring in light to the room, and still offer you privacy. Plus, it will make the exterior look like it's supposed to look I don't think the brick is anything special. Feel free to paint. however, use Romabio. It's a natural mineral product meant for bricks and requires no maintenance. Use the Classico Limewash, or the Masonry paint you can tint any color. Bonus,,,,,with the lime wash product you can apply the one coat. if you don't like it, it hoses off w/in the first 72 hours. Usually only takes one coat Some other options for color, and the landscaping and front door area: You could even do a very dark charcoal color: If you painted it all white, did a pale blue front door, no shutters, just a dark gray wood trim around the windows, and a dark garage door,,,landscaping,,,you'd have this: Or maybe you want o go full on MCM:...See More120 Year old Doug Fir: Lightening & Refinishing-HELP!
Comments (22)We have 115 year old Douglas Fir in our house in Seattle and we're planning to sand and finish ourselves. Did you have any tips during your refinishing process? How was it doing the application of the Nordic Seal? We're going to use Naturalseal instead, but then two coats of Bona Traffic HD in satin. I'm nervous about lap lines and gaps in the floor, but not much I can do to avoid either of those! Thanks in advance, your floors look amazing, I hope ours turn out that well!...See MoreTiffany Beachy Designs
