A quick search on google found "Mad Dog Metals" which might be a shop worth visiting in Reno. There are lots of online shops selling "rustic cabinet hardware" for much less than $20. From an energy standpoint alone in your situation they will pay for themselves as you will not be paying to heat water constantly. From a liability standpoint they are also good for you as there is no tank to fail and flood your home while you are gone. They do have there own issue with build up from hard water so a heavily used one in an area with hard water won't last as long as a traditional tank and that can affect the cost benefits of getting one but as infrequent as you are using it you shouldn't have an issue. My wife's father has a houseboat with a tank less hot water heater that draws water straight from the lake and heats it up for showers. It is going on 10 years now and operating good still so there are some goods ones out there that will last you a while.

I don't necessarily agree you have to have something short by the mailbox. With your mountain setting, house siting and circular drive so close to the road, some privacy for the front entry of the house may be desirable. You don't have to plant your evergreen flowering shrub butt up against the mailbox. There is plenty of room for dwarf camellias in the front bed, even if mature dwarf is 8 feet. Camellias handle light shearing quite well. Plant your groundcover around the mailbox. Go camellia shopping. This site would not fully load for me.
