Update Curb Appeal for 1960's Ranch?
Comments (24)I moved some of the photos from the album the OP linked to. This home looks to be custom built for the lot. Notice the design philosophy where the posts blend right into the trees and are hardly noticed. Why would anyone want to "beef up" the posts or glue trellises to them? It looks like some of the posts have started to be painted white to match the window and door trim for some reason. This is an easy fix and the posts can be repainted to blend. If you start messing with the posts in front of the house then you have created a monster with the posts along the garage not matching. There is no reason to start hacking the support posts out as some are suggesting, both from a design perspective and from an engineering standpoint. This home was designed to 'cocoon' the inhabitants and blend in with the natural surroundings. The FLW philosophy believed a home should work with the surroundings not just be plopped down. This home embraces that philosophy. I am very curious as to whom is the architect here. It looks like there may have been tiered steps and a platform going up into the garden in back that have now been removed and replaced with a new sloping walkway. Before doing any other modifications a professional should be consulted for guidance....See MoreNeed curb appeal help for a 60's ranch style house.
Comments (9)Could you add a couple of photos that show a bit more to the property lines left and right so we can see everything currently in the front yard? I would make the garage doors and all the trim around them the same color. You don’t want to be drawing attention in that area. The area around the front door I would make brighter with color and good lighting. The shrub in the lawn looks a bit unkempt and isn’t placed with any apparent logic relating it to anything else in the yard, so I would likely move or remove it. I would want something a couple of feet tall and rounded in the bed of purple groundcover as well as in a pot between the porch and garage.. The walkway and steps look pinched, so widen the steps and make the walkway wider. Change the placement of the walkway a bit to swing out a bit further from the house if you want to place a plant in the ground rather than a pot between the garage and the porch....See MoreHow would you update the curb appeal of this weird 60s home?
Comments (17)Like the house. Someone may have been trying for MCM? If the absence of symmetry bothers you, removing the ?porch? roof right of the garage and then recreating the forward facing gable so the right side of it matches the left side of the roof that is over the garage. Then consider adding a real or faux roofing vent or faux window centered in your new forward facing gable. Budget permitting, consider a new garage door, preferably with a natural wood finish and a row of windows across the top. When you work on the landscaping, be sure you do not put dirt against the trunk of the tree but you could certainly level the area around the tree from tree trunk out creating a planting area around the tree....See Morecurb appeal for ranch style home
Comments (1)Lose the shutters and focus on the landscaping. I'm not a fan of painting brick, but you might consider a tan that goes with the stone. You might consider a minor trim to the beech, be sure to get the opinion of a good arborist, beeches can be tricky and my guess is that's a magnificent tree. My copper beech changes color every season and is just fantastic....See MoreDenita
