It is a renovation of an existing space in our home, which was caught up last year in the California fires. We could build a wardrobe closet along that entire back wall instead of windows. It has been suggested. Everything is a trade-off. To have a larger walk-in closet we need to move the hall bathroom away from the two minor bedrooms it serves to a public space in the house --we do not have carte blanche to change everything. I cannot show a photo of the room because it's burned down. This is a little house, so.... about 1600 square feet total.

This is a 65 year old midcentury modern. The master was originally an outside room --but now we are connecting it to the house. Every change to improve something begets a problem somewhere else so, at a certain point, we need to decide what is most important to us. ie, putting the hall bath near the bedrooms means it lacks a window, but I know to my visiting sons --it will be more important to have that bathroom out of the fray. If we put that bathroom there, it restricts the size of that master closet, but there is plenty of closet space throughout that entire house for us. We are not selling it right now. We are going to live there.

How much of that back is still standing?

I don't have a problem with the guest bedroom not having a window, especially since it's not being used on a regular basis

How wide are the bedroom walls and which wall are you thinking of doing the high window? (I have 3 high windows above my bed. Love them because I added stained glass to mine so they and the bed become the focal point when you walk in.)

The bedroom walls are about 12X17.

The North wall has a 6' high window.

The East wall has a 6' sliding door.

The South wall opens to closet and master bath

So --for the West wall --another high window, a wardrobe, or just a wall?

and btw, that entire room that is the master will be demolished and rebuilt, so nothing will be standing but we don't want to go outside of the footprint --taxes....

Can you put two separate windows on the north wall so the bed would be between those?

Is there anything all on the west wall (which if I’m understanding correctly is on the front of house)?

I would put a dresser on the West wall - which is front of house but could still have high windows there.

If you shorten the wall with the laundry sink, then you get a whole lot more room because the closet wall behind the toilet can be moved to make a more workable closet. Maybe flip the pocket door, so that there is a bit more privacy around the toilet; and maybe shift the closet door down some, to allow for hanging racks on both sides:

If main level, I love a little patio off the master. French Doors. Could be great.

If upstairs and nice view, go for it.

As shead said, also consider splitting the one large window into two separate windows, that gives two options for the bed placement:

Wow, what an elegant solution to the closet problem. btw with high windows I should be able to place the bed anywhere, I believe. Even in front of the windows.

cpartist --Here's the original. The room we are making a master

is currently an unattached outside room. That room, two bathrooms, and a bit more of the north side burned. Smoke damage everywhere. We do not want to go outside of this footprint (except for closing the breezeway facing East. In the original house, the entire den area is enclosed by walls and there are two long hallways --we've tried to reduce that. Take it from me, the hallways in this house (currently) feel endless. Are you concerned the den will have no natural light?

cpartist --There are high windows the entire length of the house on that West wall, including at 3-4 directly facing the open den; see photo. they are directly above the long closet, which is just 5-6' high... Above the closet you have high windows. Still at first I was concerned and requested a pocket door from den to the bedroom adjacent, but that created other problems --and would be upsetting to the visitors I know will be using that room. Despite the high windows the den is somewhat dark compared to the rest of the house, but it will mostly be used for viewing film and screen work. Since this is only a partial renovation, there are many elements that are imperfect --every time I adjust for one problem another emerges. The only complete fix seems to require another house, altogether.
