Soffit replacement or paint?

We are currently painting the exterior of our cedar 70s home. All the wood is in good shape. I thought it was a good idea to replace the soffit with aluminum and cedar soffit (or cedar look) for maintenance and to update. My last estimator told me this is a BAD idea and to wait until I redo the exterior, as the soffit should be added over the new exterior to avoid issues with water and damage when redoing. Thoughts on this? Should I just paint my soffit for now? Wasn't planning on redoing exterior for 7 years or so....... I thought adding some new soffit with some color would add some pizzaz for now , and avoid the cost in the future but maybe a bad idea .

Comments (2)For T8 just buy something like these (GE 132-MVPS-N) on ebay and drop them right in if your luminaires are wired for rapid start and they are in good shape. It is really your best bang for the buck, and you can get good color choice and color rendering. You can find excellent ballasts on Ebay for less than $10 if you are patient and certainly less than $15. If the sockets are for instant start, you have to change the sockets as well. It can be challenging to find the right, unshunted, sockets, for a decent price in my experience. If the luminaires are wired with more than one lamp/luminaire to a ballast, you need multi-lamp ballasts. You can switch to this configuration if you desire. It means running ballast cables or wires PROPERLY outside the luminaires which will take some rewiring, but cost less. Comments (4)You can use either vinyl or aluminum or a combination of the two but the first thing you need to decide is whether the existing fascia is going to stay or be replaced. If it is not sound wood, you'll have to remove it and replace it with 2x6 lumber. Remove the soffit as well and nail up a channel (positioned such that the soffit material will be level) on the wall to support the vented soffit material. Cut the soffit material to the correct lengths and insert one side in the channel and nail the other side to the bottom of the 2x6. The fascia pieces then get tucked under drip edge coming off the roof and can be nailed from the bottom and the face (if necessary). It is important to have the sound fascia material so you can firmly attach your gutters. On my last project, I used vinyl soffit because it is easier to cut without getting it all bent out of shape. However I used aluminum fascia (pre-painted white) because it is light and easy to work with and not that difficult to cut. You can't really tell by looking at it that I used different materials.
