Electric Inserts
Comments (0)We have a woodburning fireplace - it's built in 1980 and has metal lining it. I have asthma and allergic to smoke, so we never use it. We wanted to have a gas insert but we're in a condo on concrete slab and the gas is at the other end of the unit - no practical way to run a line without extreme expense and hassle. So we're looking at electric inserts for ambience and radiant heat. We live in California so we're not looking for something that needs to heat a cold house, but just put off that soothing fireplace warmth while giving us the ambience of flickering fireplace. We are OK with a more modern or transitional look as our condo is that style. It seems like they make some pretty good ones these days that look nice and put out heat. Ideally we're looking for the DIY plug in type but we are open to a built in with electrician installation. Can anyone recommend brands, or brands/vendors to stay away from? Below is a link to just one of the many I have bookmarked as an example of what we're looking at. firelpace insert...See MoreAny experience with electric fireplace insert?
Comments (5)We put in a Dimplex 30" this fall. The DF3015. Sounds like the one you are looking at, only smaller. We like it. We had a 20 year old gas insert that was inefficient, built into a corner, with a regular chimney chase, vented up thru the roof (in case we wanted to switch to wood someday). My husband didn't want to update with another gas unit, and wanted to go electric. I really didn't care, altho I thought, gee that's going to look super fake. We bought it thru a local fireplace store and they removed the old gas unit and re-framed the opening. We had the chimney removed and roof repaired.(husband said a few chimney boards were starting to rot) Had a tile guy trim with rough slate. We already had slate down for the hearth and there was electrical behind in "the hole" already. So it was a bigger project due to the de-construction aspect, but glad we did it. I tried to take a photo of the "fire" but can't capture it without glare. Nighttime photos aren't any better. It's a nice quality unit with lots of adjustments to the flame and blower thru the remote control. This website gives the specs for our unit, altho we did not purchase it here. Comments (2)I saw on their website about not putting onto composite wood...but lots of pretty pictures of the mats on stamped concrete leading to hot tubs.. If I knew this I wouldn't have ordered a $1000 worth. I guess I better get either plywood or some thermal mats to lay under to protect the sealant......See MoreHelp me find electric fireplace insert help for existing double-sided
Comments (2)Yes! I ordered a fireplace insert thing that uses STEAM -- and we couldn't have chosen better. Don't remember the name, but we ordered it from Target. When the steam comes out it looks exactly like smoke. There are fake logs and orange lighting and we love it!. I decided that we really didn't need to see both sides of the fire at once, so I made black curtains to hang on the back side, making the two sided look (from the front) like a one sided. We just ignore the back side and it looks great....See Moredebragoerner
