Any experience with electric fireplace insert?

Our living room has a large masonry fireplace that we rarely use because there's no insert or stove and it sucks lots of expensive heated air up the chimney. Gas isn't an option since there are no lines on our street, and we're a bit afraid of propane (though some neighbors have chosen that option). We're not energetic enough to want to deal with the mess of frequent wood fires, either. That leaves a large black hole as a major focal point in our living room that's rarely used for its original intent.

A friend has one of the stand-alone electric fireplaces which doesn't look bad, and then we discovered that they make plug-in inserts for existing fireplaces. There are two 33" wide models by Dimplex that I'd like to consider, DF3033ST which has "logs," and DFG3033 which has a bed of glass "embers" and a more contemporary look. But these things cost about $1,000 and there are no local stores that have either in stock. Mail order is certainly an option but I hate to spend that kind of money without seeing it first in the flesh.

Anyone have either of these, or something similar? Are you happy with the purchase?
