Your Opinion? Are Chimney style Range Hoods Trendy
Comments (5)I'm still sad that I couldn't get the SS chimney hood that I wanted, but the consolation is that I don't have to dust it. I had to hide an AC duct in the cabinet along with the range hood ducting, so the chimney had to get nixed. I don't see the point of trying to guess what is going to be trendy in the future. I just read in another thread that staggered cabinets look dated, and my sister just redid her kitchen that way last year and she loves it. I think it looks great, too. If someone isn't telling us what's in, what's out, and what's trendy and what's not, we'd never know the difference and we'd be happy with the things we pick because they are the things that WE LIKE. To me, the point is to enjoy it NOW, in the present....See MoreChimney style hood, but must vent to the side
Comments (7)Thanks, all, this is useful: cawaps: full-width duct cover, that'd be perfect! I imagined my contractor rigging something, but of course it makes sense they make hoods that come with such a cover built in. huango and palimpest: the straight regular chimney does look nice, and if space/construction allows that'd be great. In our case it's not a full reno, though just the hood, so if breaking into the ceiling adds much $$$ that might not be worth it. But if it isn't a big deal for the contractor, we'll do it bellsmom: I get what you're saying, and yes, that would work too if for whatever reason a hood with full-width cover isn't a good option. And it would give us a bit of storage, too. Problem #2 that just ocurred to me is the side wall exhaust would come out immediately under our retractable deck awning. Hot exhaust under vinyl (or whatever it is) might not be a good idea, or at the least it could trap the smoke right there by the patio door. Hmm. If our fridge and stove were swapped this could work. In the fridge location, the stove would back to an exterior wall with no utilities or external obstructions, and the little over-fridge cabinet would be the right height for an u/c hood. Would have to remove the over-stove cabinet to make room for fridge, but no big loss. But, this would mean running a new gas line and a new water line (ice maker), and leave the stove closer to the sink than we'd like. Oh, how quickly it all snowballs!...See MoreHelp with Chimney Style hood
Comments (11)I'm not going to comment on blower or brand, but we had the same issue with the chimney length (our hood vents through ceiling and then up through the attic to the roof). Rather than pay for an expensive custom length, our duct cover extends into the attic. I cut a piece of plywood to seal off the area at the top of the cover, including the hole that the duct passes through. Then I foil taped and foamed everywhere I could to seal between the conditioned and unconditioned space. I believe the cover at the ceiling cut is caulked for a clean look. For what it's worth, I also installed a support board to the wall (screwed into studs) before tiling. This lets the hood sit more or less flush against the tile backsplash....See MoreVent hoods. Comments (11)Heh! Yes, mattress is a very good example. This is why ca. 2007 I started reading up on kitchen ventilation so I could ignore the magic that was being asserted and determine for myself what was needed. In a hood, most of the effectiveness is embedded in the sheetmetal shapes and the blower motor and fan. I rarely hear of fan failures (I can only recall one on this forum). Broan absorbed NuTone that used to provide a lifetime guarantee. Wolf uses Broan. If the hood exterior is non-magnetic stainless steel, it shouldn't ever rust or develop surface staining. What tends to fail in lower quality hoods are fan and light switches. These hoods may have thinner sheet metal, but that is not a point of failure. It might have a relationship with rattles. Mean time to failure with electronics will typically decrease with increased parts count. So some risk of shorter lifetime may be present where fancy motor control circuits are in use. It is fine to go shopping and look at hoods from the point of view of ease of use or lighting or construction quality, or aesthetics of design, but nothing should be purchased until you have gone through the process of understanding what you need a hood system to do and what its parameters have to be to achieve it. Since modern higher performance residential hoods for pro-style cooking equipment derive their requirements from commercial cooking ventilation, you may wish to start by downloading and reading the first dozen or so pages of the Greenheck Guide: https://www.tagengineering.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/KVSApplDesign_catalog.pdf...See More- 4 years ago
