First of all, in my experience, most homes do have many different types of flooring. I am not an expert, and until we started our renovation process, hadn't even looked inside a show home for years. But, I do sense that there is definitely a trend towards more homogeneous flooring. I like the effect of having that 'flow' to your rooms, and I assume it would make an area appear more spacious. I think you are right, that multiple flooring gives a home multiple personalities, but that may be what you want- I know it was when I was younger, but now have decided to completely change that decorating style. If you have a large home, it can accommodate the variety better (each person's idea of what a 'large' home is may differ too! :>) Having said that, I assume you have a door to your powder room, and perhaps one to your office? It is perfectly acceptable to have different flooring in those rooms, but I would choose something that carried the same colour tones and intensity. I think the best thing to do is to talk to a few flooring experts (and when you walk into the store, or perhaps if you phone ahead) ask to speak to their resident expert- and don't just take the first person who grabs you as you walk through the door. Each person you go over this with will have valid points and good suggestions. I would take lots of pics of your house and rooms, so they know what you are visualizing. The more you talk this through, the better chance that you will figure out what the best solution is. After all, the flooring is something you will live with for a long time, and is not feasible to change if you're unhappy with the choices.

i lost my senior great dane girl 5 weeks ago to bone cancer. it was sudden and shocking and i still look for her. my remaining dane girl and eden were joined at the hip, pip took the loss very hard and had been grieving so much, it broke my heart. i contacted pip's breeder and one of her former co-owners and asked that they keep an eye out for any adults that any breeder friends might be considering a new home for (retired show dogs, etc.). the co-owner gave me the contact information for one of her people who had a dane boy she had been looking for just the right home for and the rest is history. meet "flighty foto my way", call name "frank". frank will be 4 years old on 5/31. he is a very sweet boy and he and pippin hit it off immediately at our meet 'n' greet friday. they do zoomies numerous times a day, sleep curled up together and are just a perfect pair. pippin is so much happier and that makes me happier. even though i miss eden terribly, i am beginning to heal now that pip is feeling better. frank is a bit on the thin side because he lived the last 4 weeks with a female dane who was going through a heat cycle and when that's going on, intact males ignore food, do a lot of pacing and fretting and routinely lose weight. he's eating like a horse so i'm confident he will gain and be back to his normal weight soon. i'm giving him a few weeks to settle in and then i'll make an appointment to have him neutered.

Even going back a hundred years, even with newly built homes. I was very common at least in my area to have the LR and DR in oak. Then to save money the homes were built with pine in the bedrooms, or maple. You wanted to "impress the guests" with oak. The kitchens and hallways always had linoleum when they were built. Bathroom had white/bright tile. The entryway was always built with deep colored tile. Entryways had to be waterproof because of snow being brought in, in the winter and sturdy and resistant to wear due to sand being brought in in the summer. Tile looked prettier than linoleum to impress guests too. This is how homes were built. Different material in respective rooms. Then, mid-century additions were built onto these homes for family rooms and extra bedrooms. Due to both cost considerations and the popularity of wall-to-wall carpeting, these additions were built with particleboard covered with carpeting. It is in these additions where the flooring mismatch looks bad. In the original floorplan of when the homes were built, the flooring choices were carefully thought out for both utility and eye appeal, while allowing for cost cutting maneuvers that would not stick out like a sore thumb. As long as everything flows nicely there should be not problem with different floors in a home. Who would really want a wooden bathroom floor to take care of?

I personally would go bold with paint color. Maybe something earth toned..yellow or green. I would say blue, but it may start getting to dark with the one window. Go get bunches of paint chips and see what works with the cabs and bricks. I think once you paint the right color, the hutch will work too. I would also add some lighting if that can be done easily to keep it bright and inviting. And I love the openness and lived in worked in kitchen feel. Way nicer than the fake never been touched kitchens I see so often. I wouldn't close off the pantry closet unless your going to put food in there. And I wouldn't get tons of bins either. I have tons of open shelving right now also, and the only thing I use bind for are small things like cookie cutters and popsicle molds, things I need to keep from running away. I believe your new to these forums. You should read through some threads before taking advice or taking anything to heart. Some people have much different styles than you will, and some people will say anything thinking you asked for a critic not help decorating. I have found to just not take it to heart and take as much great advice as I can get and move on, there is some really fantastic advice here and some really great people also. Good luck, I think you have a great starting point. Your kitchen already looks better than my work in progress diy project 4 years in.
