planting and harvesting garlic

Lynn Nevins

Hi all. I've never planted garlic before (I live in the Northeast, Zone 6b I think it's considered...in NYC...). Anyway, I recently heard that you can plant a garlic clove and eventually get a whole bulb. I thought 'why not?!', so I did it. But...I think I now understand that...garlic is typically planted here in early to mid-winter, for harvest late Spring/early Summer.

I literally just planted my garlic (clove) less than a month ago. I guess it takes 7-8 months before it's ready for harvest. Considering we are now heading into summer and hot weather, should I even bother continuing at this point? Will it still grow/thrive, and then be ready to harvest in ....November?

Otherwise, maybe I'll just get rid of the garlic (it was a nice idea in theory, but my timing was off) and I'll use the pot for something else instead.

Tx!
