Old Farmhouse Exterior Paint Color - Help Please!!
1850's Farmhouse in need of new exterior paint!!
My husband and I have been fixing up our old farmhouse's interior and are preparing to work on the exterior at long last. We are struggling with finding the exact 'right' color for the house. I want either white or yellow. I am leaning toward yellow, but I know yellow can be so hard to get 'right'.
Some thoughts:
*I absolutely want white trim
*I want either a white or yellow exterior
*We'd love to keep the red door or do another bold color.
*The homes along our road are also old farmhouses. They are either white with white trim or yellow with white trim
*We do have shutters in storage that we plan to paint and put up as well. What color? It seems that the shutters on the farmhouses around us are either dark green or black.
What specific colors do you recommend?? Siding (most important), trim & shutters?!

I grew up with those white frame houses with black trim, & to me, they always looked stark & maybe institutional. & this is what I thought when I was too young to know those words! I think with a pure white background, you can use pure clear colors like red, which is a great "country" color for houses, or deep cool pastels, like the gray you have now or maybe a deeper gray. Hunter green is also a traditional color for farmhouse trim, & it would play off the white white beautifully. I'm a fan of Behr paints from Home Depot, but a lot depends on your climate; we have lots of summer & you may have lots of winter or lots of salt spray. Comments (19)@cat_ky It's been 3.5 years since the house was last stained, by the previous owners. We live at the top of a bluff and the weather can be really intense - driving wind and rain. The painters that bid were all happy to stain the house for us but just said we would have to do it again in 3-4 years. Comments (10)Coming from Chicago, IMO there is nothing worse than a house that has a muddy off color in the dead of winter against all that dirty snow Light Mist and Pearl Gray are meh! Select a color that has some real contrast to the Arctic White trim....See More

Thanks for your ideas! Here are five samples we put up today. You may need to zoom in to differentiate. From left to right:
*Hawthorne Yellow (BM)
*Banana Cream (SW)
*Weston Flax (BM)
*Yellow Essence (C&K)
*Oyster White (SW)
Thoughts?? I'm leaning toward banana cream or weston flax I think ...
As you can see we are in the middle of scrapping & priming so things look at little shabby! We are also still in the midst of finishing our front porch. Projects, projects!
I love the idea of a blue door. How about shutters?
