Newly planted Green Giant Arborvitae starting to turn brown
Comments (2)did it come from a greenhouse.. and you planted it outside.. w/o hardening it off??? i would not have amended the soil ... especially with pure peat ... one stops drainage.. and the other retains extra moisture ... i would have planted it according to the link regarding clay soils .. i would not have added magical elixirs to the water ... and a thought for the future... just because you buy it.. it doesnt necessarily mean its the proper planting time... had you held them in the garage for a week or two ... you might have been better off .. its in transplant shock.. at this point.. on this pic.. it should survive ... but only time will tell .. let us know.. in the other forum ... if the browning continues ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreRE: Pruning Green Giant Arborvitae
Comments (29)I live in Suffolk, Va, planted a zig zag row 5-7ft apart, about 2 years ago, going on third year now. They get part shade from trees that line the highway. We pull all growth (mostly vines, poison ivy and huge dandelions) away in the spring and fall. We did mulch with leaves the first year. Also, only watered when it didn't rain for a week and the temps were really high. These trees are really resilient, however we did have to replace two, at different points and both came from Lowes. The ones that came from the nursery are sturdy and growing amazingly fast. We fertilize with spikes twice a year and will continue to until it's just too dense to do so, with the reason being that they have a lot of competition on the other side of the fence. All the different vines are killing those trees and I can't wait until they're gone. They're mostly gumball trees and offer little in terms of protections from the highway. I hated those darn spikey balls/pods until recently. I now appreciated them because they keep the neighbor's cat out of my raised bed. lol One last thing I'd like to add, these trees give me the closest thing to instant gratification that any tree can give. They were about 3-4 ft three years ago and are now about 14 ft tall. I adore them and would never ever cut that top off. I am about to reduce the leaders on the two newer ones this week. I only got double leaders with the Lowes trees....See MoreEstablished Green Giant Arborvitae Dying
Comments (32)Coming in a bit late to the party but I'd agree that these trees are most likely exhibiting various degrees of drought stress. By default, just because of their structure and elevation, raised beds or berms drain more rapidly and retain less moisture than does a level, inground planting surface. More frequent watering under even normal weather conditions is usually required for these sitings. And NJ did experience a hot, dry summer. Even now (1/7/16), there are areas of NJ that are still under a drought 'watch' designation. I agree with Mike that some periodic deep watering (low and slow) during the summer months would have been very appropriate. And very likely would have prevented this discoloration and drying you are seeing now. And Ken, you are correct in your assumptions about root growth in winter. Root growth is very seasonal, generally presenting in two surges - prior to shoot growth in spring and and later in the summer after the cessation of shoot growth. Soil temps do have a bearing on root development and both root elongation and the development of new roots comes to a halt when soil temps drop below around 40F. So the ground doesn't even need to come close to freezing before root growth stops for the season....See MoreGreen giant arborvitae help
