Hi, I'm hoping to get a bit of advice. I purchased a jacaranda tree sapling online. The tree I received is about a foot or so high. It has a crook near the bottom of the trunk. Its a sharp crook, almost an L shape. Is this something that will straighten out with age or that can be corrected, or is it going to be an issue as the tree gets larger? I'm wondering if I should contact the seller and get a new tree or if I'm making a big deal over nothing. Thanks for any advice!

hard to opine without a pic ...

but there is no reason it should be a problem.. if that is the way the tree grew itself .. meaning.. its not injury related ...

i see no downside to discussing it with the seller .. you often find out the veracity of peeps.. when you question their decisions .. should he really have sent this one out???

the common response to this type of trunk question is ... you probably wont even notice it when its a foot thick trunk .. though im not sure Js get that thick.. lol ...

If it's only 1 foot tall now, the crook will be meaningless in its future life. It will be covered up by thickening trunk growth.

I'd plant the trunk straight and have the root, below ground, at an angle. Trim the high side of the roots if needed so that the graft union doesn't set too low. I've done this before and it worked. If the stock is small caliber or if there is a low branch that could become the new trunk, then doing it the other way could work just as well. You won't be able to pull the top straight until after it has rooted for a year. By then it may be too stiff to bend.

Our Jacaranda is around 8 yrs old and about 6ft high. It has been moved a couple of times but now appears to be in the right spot and is taking off well. It flowered for the first time last year. It has two single main trunks growing from just above soil level and both trunks are leafing and flowering. My husband wants to cut one trunk away because he thinks it looks odd and says they should only have one, but I love it the way it is. Is there any practical reason for removing one trunk, perhaps safety for example?

The trunk is thin/weak because the tree was staked as it developed AND was limbed up prematurely as it grew. Your tree would be much larger/taller/ and have much more mass o/a had you left the lower branches on the tree until they grew to be about 1/4 the size of the trunk at their attachment point. Wind bending branches and trunks helps to stimulate formation of lignin, a natural polymer that makes trees woody/strong, and helps to thicken trunks. Also, lightly abrading the trunk with a stiff plastic brush as it grows stimulates synthesis of a growth regulator called ethylene which helps increase thickness, and because it also stimulates lignin production, strength of trunks. I have a new jacaranda tree. It has been in my yard one year and I bought it from the local nursery when it was one or two years old. So o think it's either 2 or 3 years old. At the most I think 4 years old (guessing). I don't see any branches, it's just a straight shot up about 7 to 8 ft. It does grow the green branches from the top of the tree but is there a certain point when actual wood branches will start to grow as offshoots from the main trunk? See photo:

Thanks for the replies. I tried to upload a photo but it isn't working. It appears to have naturally grown that way. The trunk goes up about half an inch and then makes a 90 degree turn. It continues for another half an inch or less, then turns again and grows straight up.

I agree the seller should have sent a more correct tree but if it will grow out of it, I'll just let it go. I live in Puerto Rico, so I hope it will like it here and grow quite large.

Since we can't see it, it's hard to say, but could the crook have originally been part of the root? Many trees create a crook or a swollen portion to the root, early on, ensuring that it's harder to dislodge from the ground. At any rate, the Jac should love PR and grow large there.

The trick to posting photos is to make sure they become full color (not greyed out) before submitting them.
