Need suggestions to improve exterior of house
Comments (4)Your house, a mid-century ranch, has once again become a very desireable and fashionable style. It wouldn't take much to spruce yours up and make it look fresh. The first thing I'd think about is paint. The all-white look makes your house appear boring and a bit dead. Some colour would definitely give your house a lift. Why not think about a warm grey shade, or perhaps an adobe colour for the main body of the house with a very dark brown on the roof trim. Those colours would work well with the brick and add some definition. The dark paint along the roof would play up the roof angles and add some linear definition. The brick veneer is in keeping with the style of the house, and also appropriate to its period. I'd think carefully before deciding to remove it. The metal framed windows, while lacking much character or depth, are also appropriate to the house. If you need to replace them, I'd look for similar metal-framed windows in either a horizontal sliding configuration or casements. Vinyl windows aren't really appropriate to the style or period of the house. The next thing I'd do is work on the landscaping. Get rid of the tall jungle at the front. You really want to accentuate the horizontal. Low-growing swaths of shrubs and ground cover with a strategically placed multi-trunked tree or small grouping of trees (think palms, perhaps -- or something else with interesting branching) to provide a pleasant asymetrical balance might be good. While the circular drive was probably fashionable at the time your house was built, they are no longer in vogue. I'd think about jack-hammering it up and replacing it with a simple drive (perhaps exposed aggregate concrete) to the garage and some sort of landscaping. Play up the mid-century styling of your house. Don't try to change it to something it's not. Simple clean lines are the key. You might want to look for a few books specializing in this genre of house. There are a number out there. Your house has a strong resemblance to the Eichler style. There quite a few books on Eichler homes. You might also want to look at the link below for book available from Amazon on Ranch houses. You may find inspiration amongst its pages. Comments (5)I work at home and the first priority in my home office is how it functions as my workspace. My husband works at home too and he feels the same way about function over style. We don't work the same. We don't have same needs. I don't like his office, I keep the door closed. He thinks my office is funny looking, he says "permission to speak" when he enters it during the work day. And that's rare . He will normally call or text even though we are in the same house. We are both "at work". I wouldn't want to be on a laptop keyboard or screen. I have full size keyboard and wireless, ergonomic mouse. I have 2 large monitor screens. The whole shebang is on a height adjustable stand. I stand as much as I sit. Lighting/Window coverings:. Since I am at work indoors it is important I can see out. I position my workspace so I can see out. To be honest, seeing your husband's desk positioned with his back to the window, forced to look at the coach and tv, saddens me. Have you considered turning the desk? To treat the window I would get a light filtering roller, solar shade and flank it with colorful panels. I would want to minimize the amount of the window that is covered when it's up to allow maximum natural light. It's purpose is to reduce glare when needed. Your husband's work space needs a task lamp. I don't know what your husband does but think about colors. Does he like a calming workspace or does he want a more energetic stimulating one? Right now with the wall color and the couch you are pretty somber. He may prefer you punch it up a bit with orange or keep the mellow vibe going with blue and olive. With regards to a rug, think about his chair. Will it have a plastic pad so he can still roll easily? Or is the rug just for over by the sofa? 50 hours a week is a lot of time in one space. Let your husband's work needs and comfort be number one and prettiness take a backseat....See MoreLooking for advice/improvements on house plan design!
Comments (50)And AS there are those like yourself, who think no one needs an architect. However,in this case, the OP said she/he planned on hiring one, so why the need for you and booty buns to continue on your needs to diss the idea of using a design professional? cpartist - I know you read my comments and AS's comments, because you responded to them directly. So you clearly know we NEVER "dissed the idea of using a design professional". In fact, we did the OPPOSITE of what you claim. We suggested the OP use a design professional to offer suggestions to the existing plans they already have. The only thing we did was push back on your contention that the OP must only use a design professional to create an entirely new custom plan from scratch, rather than providing advice/tweaks to the existing plans. So in the words of Mark Bischak, Architect..."that is a false and inflammatory statement"....See MoreHome Office Design - Help
Comments (7)Have you thought through what you need for your home office? For example, in my former house, I had a free-standing desk that, granted, had more stuff on it than yours in the picture above, but was in constant danger of me accidentally pushing stuff off the back of the desk. Which yes, I tended to do. Also, in your layout, would having the desk facing that direction be a distraction to the person working at the desk? And lastly, is there a view out the window and door that the person at the desk might enjoy looking at?...See MoreVadim V
