I see no problem with mixing shiny granite with matte backsplash or vice versa. I don't see why they would have to match. In fact if you like different layers and textures I believe this would add to that effect. Haven't ordered either yet but plan on mixing hones countertop with shiny subway tile bs in my new kitchen. BTW I love your island! And the stools too, where did you get them?

I won't worry about reflections. Rather, I'd try to ensure that I can get enough lighting in the room. Wall washers may not provide sufficient task lighting since they are usually used for decorative purposes. Copied from another thread The rule I used was to achieve ~ 35 lumens per sq ft. Take the light output from the individual components that will make up the main lighting. eg - 1 recessed can. Assume ~ 600 lumens per can Calculate the total sq footage of the kitchen * 35 and divide that by the output per can. Adjust as necessary - lower lumens per sq ft? Higher luminous output for individual cans? Note that the formula I used grossly simplifies things. For instance 1. It assumes that the light sources are not directed spotlights. 2. The distance from the light source is not taken into consideration. 3. The spread of the light beam is not considered as the actual placement of each light source is subject to other considerations.

pattisue-oh I love leathered with some color and movement. That looks AWESOME. Old house we had polished stone and did a matte slate backsplash. Liked it This house I have leathered stone and I am doing a polished/gloss splash. I think the contrast will be nice. If you haven't had leathered before oh I do love it. Have you seen tiles or pictures that you like? Try to find some pics and see if that helps you make up your mind.

This is my third try answering, just now. We thought the shiny black countertops were pretty swanky looking, but the matte backsplash looked a little too caasual. Lowe's had a produc t (sorry, I don't remember the name) that you just rub on with a rag, and it helped them to shine.
