Please help make my room more contemporary with blues
I'm looking for ideas to give this room a contemporary, calm feel with blues. The rug is soft blue silk, almost white in some light. Walls SW Alabaster. Chair fabric is taupe with a shimmery background. Taupe leather sofa. Off white linen drapery.
There's a great view so I like the chairs side by side to look out the window. I moved a cocktail table in to get a feel for the size, this table is 55x35. The old one was round 54" and it felt too big.
I'd like a cocktail table/ottoman that's not glass. Current end table is 14x22. All ideas welcome!

3 years agoyou have a wonderful living space with tons of light and a very soft and serene feeling. I would lean into that feeling. a few initial thoughts.
pull the sofa out from the wall so you can add a console table behind it and add a couple table lamps to the console. may want to try moving the rug 90degrees so the long side is parallel to the sofa. add a couple side tables and a coffee table and then some an additional art to bring in some blue color to the wall. consider bringing blue into a coffee table or ottoman. heres some ideas for coffee tables

Make my daughter dream come true room...please help
Comments (5)I have a 6yr old DD and her room is painted Old Rose Glaze by Pittsburgh Paints (Lowes) on upper walls with white wainscotting below. Comments (32)I'll chime in as a fan of contemporary myself, and a not-so-much fan of country. Your kitchen definitely has a country look to it for reasons already posted. The natural color oak cabs unfortunately don't fall into any description of contemporary, but I would expect touching the cabs to be off the table. If you need canisters for practical reasons (e.g. storage), then consider stainless steel. I got a nice set from Costco for not much money, and Crate & Barrel also have nice ones. Your family room has a contemporary look to it (with the exception of the table lamp). If you look at the elements there in comparison to your kitchen, what you see are solid colors, clean lines, and a lack of nicknacks. Look at the window treatments in particular. Solid color valence, and solid color drapes. Also look at the artwork over the fireplace. Dramatic dark frame that matches the color of the fireplace below, complementary colors in the matting, and a repeating dark brown mat towards the inside. So ask yourself, "how do I bring these design themes to my kitchen?" Well, replace the window treatment with a solid color. I would recommend a dramatic color that matches some other elements in the room such as your counters. Vertical pleating such as you have now is more country. No pleating (like your window valence in the family room) or horizontal pleating (like in roman shades) are more contemporary. Although roman shades always have a summer beach house feel for me, but that's probably just me. For the stuff on top of the cabinets, you should replace them with repeating items in solid or repeating colors. For example you could use a dozen clear/colored art glass plates that again match the counters. The key here is to use multiples of the same item in the same or similar colors, whereas currently you have a mix of disparate items (plate, jug, basket, bottle, etc). Anyway you get the idea - repeating elements, repeating colors, simple lines, no clutter. Those things say "contemporary" to me. Comments (4)I think I will eliminate the upper on the right. I am pretty tall 5’ 10” so it’s not terrible but I don’t know if I would be able to reach around and over the w/d. My height is also why I wanted them up off the floor and didn’t want them stacked. I keep overthinking this and try to look at this picture of the farmhouse kitchen I used for years. It was cooked in for 50+ years by my in laws and know when I look back at it I think how was it? - Because you don’t have room for side tables, add a console behind couch with lamps and pottery and lower the art by a fair amount so it feels more relatable to seating and console

- Straighten the single chairs for symmetry and add blue cushions. On couch, add a variety of cushions and use various soft colors and patterns for interest.
- For better balance on rug, opposite chairs, add additional seating like the small benches
- A large square padded coffee table would be ideal with a large tray

3 years agoI could see an ottoman with a pattern. Could have some blues, etc.; but I could also see something like this, picking up on furniture color, etc.

3 years agoFooling around a bit with your suggestions. I love the idea of the console table behind the sofa. That solves the lighting issue. I just ordered some furniture sliders (the sofa is heavy!) and will pull it out and post when they get here. In the meantime, here is a mock up.
