Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Looking for help on how to arrange rectangular living room

We're closing on a house soon and we're debating how to arrange the living room. We'll be buying new furniture for it, so I'm open to suggestions on that as well. The room is 12 x 20 and is also the entrance (see photos). We're thinking of putting the tv at the

Edit: Also, there's hardwood under that carpet, so we'll definitely be pulling it up.

Tho it lacks luster now this is a great room! I would put a sofa facing the windows, possibly a small L sectional, two chairs under the window, tv on back wall. I would think about the living area starting where the window end next to the door. Because the room is 12ft wide you could put say a 7 foot sofa floating in the room to give some division but i feel like that might look cramped whereas using the walls in this room can help it feel more open. thank goodness there is hardwood! you can then put a rug down in the living room and a runner in the entry.

These are the 3 ways I can see, the last being my least favorite as you cant look out the window, and glare on the tv. I see here too that there is no overhead lighting, so you also want to think about how you can place tables, for lamps and or floor lamps.

The best setup is not sofa facing far wall. With that set up, the sofa will be in the entry and/or right up on top of fireplace at strange angle. From a Feng Shui standpoint best place for sofa in that space is anchored on the far wall. That far wall was not designed for a tv. That is where the sofa should be. The tv would probably not even need an extension arm when mounted on wall where orange box is in picture. I was just offering that as an extra option so that OP could see how doable it is. Plus, if they wanted to watch tv from dining area they could with an extension arm, but that is probably not necessary. I am aware of entrances, etc. TV could be flush to that side wall and they could probably still view it fine. But having some angling capability, even slight angling capability, could make it more comfortable perhaps. That is really the best setup given their space. A couple of streamlined swivel chairs could complete seating arrangement.

Can you return it and get a smaller one? (I admit I think your fireplace wall is lovely and I personally wouldn't ruin it with a television. But I am a tiny minority who has lived without television for almost 30 years.) Is there another room in which to put it, or do you prefer to use this room for watching it?

Having trouble connecting the floor plan with your photos. I walk into your front door and the kitchen is to my right. Keep going and I would come to the dining area? You have one sofa separating the living from dining? How about photos of just the living dining area and throw in some measurements. Imagining the left side of this large window is your fireplace and the right side is the patio door could you do a long sofa, long entertainment piece and one more chair on this viewer's side of the ottoman? If you keep a dining area, you could always pull in those chairs for extra seating.

Thank you! This is super helpful! Forgive me, I'm new to floor plans, are the squares tables? My wife likes 1. I like 1 as well, but my only concern is having to look to the side to see the tv, but that might just be something I have to live with. I guess 2 would be best for tv watching purposes, but I suppose if it really bothers me I can always move a chair over if I'm watching something long like a movie or baseball game. Thanks again!

I have a similar layout, and long skinny rooms are tricky!

I like #1 the best, but I’d you’re concerned about craning your neck, put a TV in a corner unit next to the big window. You could move one of the chairs to the opposite corner of the shorter wall.

I think option number 1 is the best----you definitely want the TV on that far wall so it's not the first thing you see when you walk in from your front door. I disagree with the idea of a corner TV unit---the beauty of this room is going to be enhanced by a clean floorplan that contains enough negative space for the eye to rest....not filling in the corners with furniture. You'll have one really great spot on the sofa/sectional for TV watching and you can use swivel chairs on the window side and pair the chair closest to the front door with an ottoman and that becomes the 2nd great spot for TV watching. I have a 3-d rendering program that would help you visualize the furniture layouts better and Ethan Allen has some mid century modern lines that would look awesome in this room! Wall Mount the tv on a pullout swivel, so it can be slightly angled for watching.
